Shockwave!

Doesn't the BATF send out info and directives to law enforcement agencies about things like new firearm's nomenclature, maker's and model's?

I would hope so, but "I didn't get the memo" is a common excuse.
Trust me, at the wrong time/place, pending clarification, it will be looked upon as a sawed-off shotgun. It is why I recommended patience above.

I was very impressed with the way the Shockwave handled, and patterned.

It is also the first firearm I've ever shot that I would consider stippling the grip; the birdshead handle, while very comfortable, was just a touch on the slick side for something with ample recoil.
I wonder if something like this might be good for the grip? Hi people. Before we start carrying the Shockwave with a chest strap or tossing it behind the seat of a pickup as a truck gun, perhaps it would be better to first see if law enforcement agencies are clued in to this item. To us, the Shockwave looks cool. Guaranteed it won't look that way, loaded, to a cop on a car stop at 1AM. It will simply be a "sawed-off shotgun" to the uninitiated. And the argument that it is a "firearm" is not gonna fly (Of course, it is a firearm!); at the very least, a visit in cuffs to the station house seems likely until everything is sorted out.

Perhaps patience is called for: taking the gun in a gun case, unloaded, to the range for practice. Up to you...

I wouldn't want to be the arresting officer. Ignorance of the law is a two edged sword.

The Remington 870 version looks really cool. Only thing I don't like is the Mossberg makes full use of the 14" barrel by giving what equates to a full mag tube, 5 shots vs the 4 shot Remington tube.

Now if somehow it was legal to have a flush barrel on the 870... but doing so would require an SBS stamp. The Shockwave is cool because it avoids that.

Jay, I don't understand why if the barrel is 12 instead of 14 it would be illegal? 14 is 4 inches under already so it seems to me to simply be a matter of the manufacturers to make it 12 instead of 14.

They have to stay over an OAL of 26" to be legal. Going to a 12" bbl would put it under that limit. You COULD technically extend the grip another 2" back but that would look stupid.

This should take care of any legality questions.

Any? Legal Questions.

This should take care of or at least assist with answering any legality questions.

Richard,

Please refer to my previous post in this thread. If you will open the link I provided, you will find that while Federal Statutes seem to be fairly clear on the new Mossberg Shockwave, they certainly aren't so cut and dried when it comes to the state of Texas. My concern with your post is it would appear to be a blanket statement that Federal law will trump state statutes. My concern is that such thinking might place some of our members in legal jeopardy, those in Texas in particular.

I suggest a wait and see approach (at least for our Texas members) until we can get a definitive answer from the TSRA or the Texas AGs office.

Many thanks. I saw that letter. Of course, ownership can be subject to local interpretations. We all know which states would immediately rule against the Shockwave. :( But to read that link in post 36 referring to Texas, THAT surprised me.

I like the Shockwave. I just don't want to see anyone get "jammed up" with it by pushing the envelope. Good shooting!

I just spoke to a couple Michigan State Troopers from different Posts. None had any information from ATF in regards to the Shockwave. They were friends and are aware of the "firearm", but no official notification. Be Safe,

Anyone know if you can buy one of these across state lines like a regular long gun? I'm going to be near Idaho this weekend and might pop across to search for one (if I can). Taxes being what they are over there.

I would think you could via a Idaho FFL to your Texas FFL.
But last time I checked with gunBuyer they still had em.
That was around 6pm Wed.
$369.00 shipped.

I think you're missing my point --- if I can buy in Idaho over the counter, I avoid the very high sales tax here in WA. ID has one but it's lower. It won't be more than about a $20 difference on a gun like the Shockwave, but it's worth a short drive.

If you transfer in to WA, the state collects on the full sale price even if the seller is out of state. WA loses a lot of $ to online and out of state vendors because, well, the sales tax is too freaking high.

It's late and it just hit me.
You can't buy a gun over the counter out of your state of residence and transport it across state lines. No gun shop would sell it to you in ID.
Better check the BATF website. Even a FTF is illegal Idaho to Texas resident.
FFL to FFL only.

You can buy long guns all day long from an FFL and transport across state lines. It's pistols that are restricted. Since the Shockwave is neither, I'm not sure where it falls.

I've bought long guns out of state over the counter. It's private sales that aren't legal between residents of different states.

All I know is I stopped by one of my go to LGS's on Tuesday and asked about getting one after seeing it at Tulsa. Mine should be at the shop today or tomorrow. $430 out the door, and I really don't care what box gets checked on the 4479. (Neither does Missouri, for that matter . . . )

For general information, at Tulsa, the one I saw had a card reflecting that it was to be sold as a pistol (no out of state sales except to FFL), kinda like the Mossberg 500 .410 sold only with a pistol grip that I have . . .
