shortening barrel

I know this has been talked about, but would anyone know the average cost in labor to
shorten the barrel on my 15-22 down to 14.5"? I heard about the $200 tax stamp already. just want to know the basics in cost.

Why 14.5"?

Just to state the obvious, 14.5 is below the legal limit and will require a permanently attached muzzle device that makes the overall length 16 inches. Hopefully the OP already knew that and is planning accordingly.

Not if he's planning on making an SBR, which is a rifle with a barrel of less than 16", and is legal with ATF approval. (He already mentioned the tax stamp.)

I agree if you are going to make an SBR go shorter than 14.5. I just did mine down to 10 and love it.

14.5 + flash hider = 16 Non NFA.

If you are going SBR, go shorter than that.

I just figured you asking, "why?" was like asking why someone would choose to paint their gun or change their stock or etc. That's all.

And I figured there's gotta be a reason besides just wanting to. Maybe there's not. Does it give some sort of advantage or something? That's all I was asking.

Threading die 1/2-28 costs $5 to screw on your Flash hider.
Then the legal stuff.
This way, saves your self some money.

I doubt he wants to "Bubba-fy" his barrel.

If you are going SBR, go shorter than that.

Why? Because:

1. Improved transitions when shooting speed-steel competitions. HUGE advantage.

2. Louder report, so the electronic timer can hear the shot when shooting speed-steel competitions.

3. More maneuverable in the front seat of the car (if you drive around your property with the rifle).

4. If you add a suppressor, the final length can be kept a reasonable 16 inches or so.

5. If you add a suppressor, a short barrel will keep the bullet subsonic.

6. Looks cool.

You can use a hack-saw, file, and crowning tool to shorten the barrel. Easy peasy.

However, I would never cut the threads with a die. You're asking for trouble. Threads should be centered on the bore, not the barrel OD.

The mandated 16" is also just a thumb suck number that doesn't actually MEAN anything.

With the .22, however, it is fairly close to the optimal barrel length. That being said I can make the same sort of shots with my 4.25" pistol as a I can with my 16" rifle. There isn't much to a .22. You'll get some 600m terminal ballistic differences with a 10.5" and a 20" 5.56mm, but not so much with a paper punching .22 at <100m.

Then you have non-concentric threads and a non-recessed crown with no chamfer.

It should be done by a professional or someone with plenty of experience IMO. It's not a shotgun barrel.

He's right there, but there is a tool to help you do that if you don't have access to a lathe.

NO! You thread barrel on a lathe, not with some Home Depot die - at least by people who know what they are doing.
