Shot my S&W 629 (Shiny Harry) at 100 yards, I think it's ready to hunt! >>>
I bought a beautiful 629 Classic with an 8 3/6 inch full lug barrel to use as my deer hunting gun next season.
When I practiced at 25 and 50 yards, I realized I wasn't confident that I would be able to aim accurately at 50 yards or farther. So I mounted a Burris 2-7x long eye-relief scope on it, and it shot very accurately at 25 and 50 yards.
I left it sighted dead on for 50 yards, and it was less than an inch low at 25 yards. But I needed to see what the drop would be at 100 yards, and how well I could shoot at that distance.
Weeks later I finally got a chance to shoot it at the bench-rest range at Miami Rifle and Pistol club. The height of the concrete seat was way too high compared to the bench, so I was shooting with my head leaned over sideways, but I was still able to see what I was doing.
I was shooting single-action, using Hornady 240 grain XTP ammo, off a sandbag rest, and all the groups were about as shown below, shooting 4 to 5 inches low. Some were spread vertically and some horizontally, but I'm sure that was all me, as there was very little breeze that day.
Still, I think I found out what I needed to know!
I can't wait to make some venison chile!
Thanks for looking!
