Should I take job at LGS?

I’ve worked off and on at two LGS for the last 20 years. I’m glad I don’t do it full time. Both are owned by close friends.

You will find that selling is an art which seems to have been lost. Some customers will want to argue and some will pump you for information and then leave. And know that there isn’t much profit in new guns unless they sell a boatload everyday. Ammo and accessories is where the money is made.

And it’s true that you will want every used gun that comes in. Which is fine if it works for you.

The paperwork is a pain but it must done and done properly. Expert to have someone looking over your shoulder and checking your work.

It took me too much work to get my disability approved. I'm not going to have SS taking any back.

But I did help out (unpaid) at a local store for a while, mainly trying to help folks who were purchasing a gun understand what sorts of ammo, cleaning gear, etc that they might want to look at while the BG checks were running.

The lack of knowledge that even the store clerks displayed was scary.

I worked in a LGS for a plus half dozen years after Ma Bell. The items mentioned were a part of it, such as dealing with fools, idiots and other such people. The thing that really got to me was were not allowed to sit and my legs just couldn't handle it anymore. The remang thing was I bought too many guns that people brought back that were a good buy after markdown and employee discount. It was fun with these exceptions.

I was at an LGS and made the comment I couldn't work at a gun store because I would be buying to many guns.
He said he was like that at first but then he got a grip on himself to just sell to others. He said he realized he took the job to earn money rather than owe it to the company store. It's best to just look at guns as eye candy rather than another gotta have it gun if you work at an LGS. Sell the candy to the customers.

I don't think I could work at an LGS that doesn't have a gun range. I just couldn't sell some old lady a gun without telling her before she buys a gun she needs to go to a range that rents guns and see what gun she can handle and be confident with. The old lady or man for that matter is looking for something they can use for protection rather than another knickknack on a shelf or in a drawer. I am sure the store management would not like me sending an easy sale out the door without a gun.

I also don't know jack about most rifles. This here rifle is black and has one of them folding stocks so this has got to be best you can buy. Don't ask me why it uses such a little bullet but still is so deadly. I think it uses small bullets so more can be carried. LOL Just kidding, well a little bit anyway.

Since I retired over 6 years ago I just think work has become a four letter word now so it must be bad. I found I really don't even want to do volunteer work either. I was lucky enough to live through the rat race and enjoy my permanent paid vacation.

I think if I worked at an LGS I would need to wear gloves because my fingerprints would be all over every gun on the store.

Took a job in a local pawn shop running the gun counter after retiring from the post office. You do get to see some interesting stuff and a lot of run of the mill stuff. Meet some great people and a few jerks and know it alls. Worst downside is the trips to court for people who lie on the forms and felons in possession of firearms.

I did this very thing a few years back before we moved, I loved it.
You will have your idiots to deal with of course, but you will also meet some good people and get the chance to pass on some of your knowledge and possibly learn somethings too.
I was a customer that would hang out and visit and we talked guns and hunting and such, one day he asked if I would be interested in helping him out, for me it was great, I kept my regular job (dog groomer) and I would go in when my grooming was finished, it sure beat sitting on the couch and watching tv.
As a bonus we became good friends, he let me have first crack at trade ins and I could order new guns and reloading supplies for myself at cost, I had a great boss!
If it feels right I say go for it, I would do it again if the opportunity came along.
One piece of advice: if they 1099 you, make sure you keep enough money back to pay Uncle Sam.
Good luck! Ron

I have been working part time in the local high end LGS for going on four years. The only good thing about it is that you get to see some nice old guns walk in the door, occasionally. And speaking with newshooters and the few pleasant people who come in makes the time pass.

The downsides are many. People are largely ignorant. And a percentage of them are proud of it. The phone calls are annoying. If you want to know if we have a particular item in stock, fine. If you want an inventory and pricing of same, get off your lazy *** and come down and look for yourself. ;)

And then there is the chance of getting robbed. I have had my gun out more in that store than I did in 20 years on the street. Thank God the miscreants contemplating the robbery chose not to roll the dice.

Overall, I would not recommend working in a LGS. Especially if you like guns. :) Good luck with your decision! Regards 18DAI

Why not.....you can always quit if it dose not measure up.
