Should We Be Scared?

I'm 65 years old. Wasn't it our generation that became hippies, engaged the drug culture in the 60's, shocked our predecessors with long hair, anti-war protests, communes, free love etc.?

Who raised the current and previous generation? We did. Schools can only do so much. The real education and preparation for life as an adult remains (and should be) in the home.

Yes, and the older generations who grew up watching soap operas, game shows, Westerns, shoot 'em ups-what did Newton Minow said in 1961, "TV is a vast wasteland." Reading pulp novels, skin magazines-that really prepared them to tackle social problems, deal with technology, etc.
What are the kids getting in school ? The Public Library on nearby Princeton NJ has a display on "Forbidden Books". Every last one is sexually oriented and several are just pornographic.

If two of my grandchildren are any example, we should not only be scared we should me frightened out of our skin. On the other hand, my other two grandchildren are examples of what caring parents and home schooling can accomplish. the oldest of the latter two has his ham license and can out-shoot my 73yo eyes. And I'd trust him with the finest of my firearms. The other two I will only trust with firearms made before 1940 and of no value.

Yeah, it's always fashionable to rag about the younger generation and what they don't know...but there are a lot of older folks as well, especially these days, who don't know how the government is supposed to work, who don't understand our Constitution, and who are abysmally ignorant of our history...

I swear I feel like we're watching a pact with the devil play out... :(

I Phone 7 works.

Thanks again.
Just held the 7P in my hand for that quick pic.
Will explain why in a thread titled.. X Frame Humor.

Those reds were made from some laminated .5mm veneers and finshed at 5/8"...15.88mm left over from flag grip work back around '80.
1.25" wide is too thin but ok for pics.
Needed a set of reds as air brushing the rubber OEMs red was not great.

Had to photoshop some areas near the marks for a fabric transfer so the hammer/trigger guard is a bit better on light colored fabrics as I am waiting for white fabric.
Hammer
Trigger guard
Scratches
Will pretty up those reds and add some colored wood when time permits.
Red looks better on a blued gun with some color added.

To keep with this thread about slackers...
best buddy's boy graduated with a degree in photography.
Many of us have new body parts in our mouths and/or cut in elesewhere, as he trains and sets up facilities to get those chores accomplished on CNCs.

Exactly...in fact, I daresay that most real education takes place outside of school...

I am proud to say my sons can tell you exactly what happened on December 7, 1941...on June 6, 1944...on October 14, 1947...on November 22, 1963...on July 20, 1969. They can quote from the Declaration of Independence, and from Patrick Henry's most famous speech...

They know that the B-17 is the greatest airplane of all time...and the Porsche 917 has no equal among racing machines...

They've held the ice tongs their grandfather (my dad) used when he was 14 years old and supporting his family by driving an ice truck during the Great Depression. They know all about the PBY Catalina their other grandfather flew on in World War II.

They can have an intelligent and informed discussion about current events...and American government...and the war in Ukraine. And they can recognize Frank Sinatra's or Ella FitzGerald's voice immediately... :)

Schools will never teach these things...nor should we expect them to... :)

I taught Math for the last 10 years. 3x3x3 would be impossible to answer without "phone assistance." 3x3 would baffle half a;though some are resourceful enough to use their "digital calculators" (since the product is less than 10, the fingers will "hold" 3 sets of 3). Joe

That is a rudimentary, order it operations question, which anyone should be able to do instantly, in their heads. The answer is 27.

Whoa there! Yes, you and I would immediately say that the answer is 27. However, if we're talking the new math, the answer can be anything you want it to be...and then they'll give you a trophy!:D

Ask a member of our family what 3x3x3 equals and they'll say, how long is the barrel on that N frame?

Young gal filling her new car with gas was in an Air Force uniform.
I asked if there were any B52s at Homestead.
Her reply, "those wingy things".
My reply, "sounds like B-2 and you should take a tour of the Base".

That really doesn't surprise me. Probably some admin pogue doing her 4 years for free college.

My dad's father told him that be and his generation were doomed to failure. My dad hit me with a slightly watered down version of the same speech.

I have yet to feed that defeatist bilge to my children, grandchildren, Gen Xers, millennials, or Gen Zers. It is becoming their world to do with as they see fit as Boomers are in the minority.

This tired song has remained the same since the Earth cooled.

I expect that the actual number of idiots was not that high. The video would have been heavily edited to show just particularly bad examples. Yes there are those like that out there. Thankfully, not near as many as some would have us think.

These kiddies are probably not stupid, they are simply uneducated. The true problem here is not that they don't know anything, but they were allowed to graduate in the first place.

Respectfully, I think the problem isn't that they're uneducated so much as it's that they didn't get the same education we did, and weren't taught what we think of as "important". They know a lot, actually...just not what we know.

(The reverse is also true...every time I grocery shop, I see those magazines in the checkout line, and wonder who the people on the covers are.)

I agree. I know that a lot of the knowledge I used during my job was not learned in school, but at someone else's knee and by experience. I don't have any children or grandchildren to teach, but I did go back to an old employer for a couple days to pass along my knowledge and experience to the people there. I believed that I owed it to the profession.
