Sideplate Issue

...

Update

I removed the hammer block and put the plate back on and it works perfect. Put the hammer block back in and it binds when tightened. Although not visible, I am suspecting it might be bent just enough to be the problem. I am hoping I can get a replacement part from S&W.

Why not just leave the hammer block out of the gun?
Removing it won't affect the functionality of the revolver at all.
I have removed it from all of my S&W's. (2 w/ hammer mounted f.p., 4 w/ frame mounted f.p.)

And it is a hammer block, S&W revolvers do not have a transfer bar!
Even in the newer frames with frame mounted firing pin, the hammer hits the back of the firing pin directly, not via a transfer bar.

I have removed it from all of my 6 S&W's.
Me too, except for the two guns I use for defense (just to keep them 100% stock).

But I really get yelled at on forums whenever I suggest leaving them out.....

Just throw the hammer block AWAY.. Problem solved.. After all, it's YOUR gun...

Well, it's your gun as long as you own it, but very few of us own a gun until the end of the gun's life. And once it moves on to a new owner, it becomes their gun from which you removed a safety device. Now there is only a tiny chance that the absence of the hammer block would ever be the cause of an injury (S&Ws were pretty drop safe for decades before the device was added.) But a new hammer block would be an incredibly cheap investment to make to insure that there was NEVER any blowback on you or your heirs from removing it.
