I have a m-317with a 3 in. barrel, "V" notch rear and hi-viz front .I have problems shooting/seeing with the v notch and the sight is raised almost to full height to hit the bull at 7 yards . S&W says the rear sight is .122 high and the front is .269 . I would like to replace it with a square notch , possibly a .148 or slightly higher ,not sure ? Also if the sight is staked in , do I have to do something special to remove the blade or just unscrew it and do I need to purchase a staking tool for the new blade ? Any help for this project would be appreciated .

If anyone could help it would sure be appreciated. I'm going to replace the sights on my son's 317. I've removed the the front HiViz sight and want to replace it with a black ramp front sight & replace the rear sight leaf with a square black notch.

Thanks, Ken

Well I went ahead and ordered a.146 in.rear sight from S&W .Then I found my S&W shop manual book I bought on ebay years ago , and along with the instructions that came with the sight I proceded to change my sight . Well with my large clumsey hands I slipped and the tiny plunger shot out of the screw head and vanished .I also learned that the .146 sight is for a k-frame , hmm.Went on line to S&W parts and yep the windage screw is different in head size only . Windage nuts are the same , so I ordered the screw an extra nut and a couple springs and plungers . The staking tools I ordered earlier . Second time had a better turn out and the white outlined .146 sight made a big difference with the hi-viz front . My 317 shoots alot better or I guess I shoot it alot better now that the sights agree with me . Happy ending till the next adventure , to drill my 29-4 Whitetail Hunter limited addition or not ?
