I was shown a picture of a K-22 last night that potentially has had the sights replaced. I don't have a S/N, but the revolver in question is represented to be circa 1948.

The single picture I saw (left side) was not ideal but I believe the front sight currently fitted is a Lyman, Redfield, King or similar sight blade with a brass bead.

Was the stock front sight integral to the barrel and would it have required modification to install another front sight?

The rear sight has a different side profile than I am familiar with and I'm told that it is adjustable for elevation only.

Looking at the SCS&W 3rd Ed, it appears that the stock front sight would have been a Patridge front sight and the rear would have been W&E adjustable.

Any thoughts as to what rear sight this pistol may be wearing?

Would a conventional K frame adjustable rear sight install on this revolver (barring modifications to fit the current sight)?

Thanks.

The K22 (Model 17) has a pinned front sight. It is furnished with a patridge sight normally, but sometimes replaced by the owners. S&W (many years ago) would ship one to King sight co. for installation of a specific sight at the purchasers request.

Did the gun have a barrel rib ?

Could it have been an outdoorsman ?

Yes, there was a barrel rib.

I do not believe it is an Outdoorsman, as a buddy has one the difference between the two is noticeable.

ETA: I just saw the revolver if question. Front sight had no name on it and was loose. Rear sight was entirely homemade and while it may have had two screws, I'm not sure that there was any elevation adjustment. I'm guessing the rear screw helped hold it on.

All the numbers matched but it was in much worse shape than the picture portrayed.

At least I can stop wondering. It is a pre-17 that someone slightly more mechanically adept than Bubba used a LOT and made a replacement rear sight for.
