Does anyone have a good schematic of the internals on a Single Shot 3rd Model?
Having just acquired a Single Shot, and not being too familiar with them, I do know the 3rd Model has the trigger centered in the trigger guard, and may be fired double action. At first I thought something was wrong, as mine would only fire single action with the hammer manually cocked. Removing the side plate, and giving it a good cleaning, I find that it will fire double action (very smooth) provided I push the trigger forward a few thousandths. It just is shy of clearing the sear. It's like the trigger just won't go forward in return quite enough. It is possible some of the internals have been replaced, as the frame dates to July 1917, but the 8" barrel dates to a gun shipped in 1911. The frame appears to have been re-blued, but the barrel does not. I understand the internals were from 32 HE parts. I am fairly certain the mainspring has been replaced, and there was a 1/16" shim between the spring and the strain screw. When this is removed, the rebound slide hits the spring keeping the trigger & hammer from full travel. Possibly the Trigger Lever is worn and too short? Also, when the side-plate screws are snugged down tight, the trigger will move very hard, like it is too thick and the tightening of the side-plate makes it not enough room to clear. With the screws just barely snug, it works just fine. The side plate is numbered to the frame.
I'm sure this is a parts assembled gun, and not everything fits as precisely as it should.
I do have David Chicoine's book on Antique Firearms Assembly/Disassembly, but there isn't any information on the Single shots in it. Comparing to the 32 HE, there is a lot of differences. Any help is appreciated.
Taking a look at the internals, alongside my 22/32 Target,it looks like the rebound slide in the Single Shot has no "hump" on the top which rests against the bottom of the hammer and would push the sear up slightly. Think this could be the problem with the Single shot?
