I just joined S&W forum not too long ago, so I'm finding all these older threads that catch my eye, and sometimes can't resist adding my own 2 cents. This one in particular is a debate as old as guns and pillows
My own lil humble opinion is to each their own, restless sleepers who are prone to moving around in their sleep or having nightmares should probably have the gun they have the most training/range-time with either in a drawer, or just out of reach, or even in one of those 'Sentry' safes with the buttons you don't need to see to punch the code in, but if you sleep like the dead, and especially if you live alone, do what you will. I don't really move in my sleep much, so I keep a Sw1911 in .45acp within reach, and my mossberg 500 with empty chamber and safety on just out of reach.
Why? I live in a rough neighborhood, because i get a nice apartment at an affordable rate. I'm sorry to say about three months after I moved here, sometime last summer I was having a conversation with a friend around 1:30 am and we were interrupted by thirteen pistol shots that happened and were over within 5 seconds or so. I remember grabbing my friend and shoving the both of us to the floor and saying '#@*$ I wish that was fireworks...' and sure enough after a few moments went by, I took a peek out the window and there was a body in the street :-/ Turns out a neighbor of mine (I had never met him or spoke with him at that point) was an NRA member and legal registered gun owner, he awoke to strange invasive noises, grabbed his gun and found himself face to face with two intruders, BOTH had a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Unfortunately all three involved were shot, but the home owner was the only survivor, he was shot in the thigh, but recovered, one of the offenders died in the street trying to escape, and the other died in the hospital. I find this very sad, that two guys could be that desperate. That wasn't the only time i've heard pistol fire since I moved here, and can't wait to move to a more rural area! Until then, I don't want any trouble, but would like to reach a ripe old age before my days are through.
