Sleeping with a J Frame

I can only do it because there are no kids in the house. I am the kid of the house lol since I'm only 18 and still live with my parents. But me and my dad both sleep with loaded guns within reach at night. So an intruder will either get shot by my .357 mag or my dads .357 sig. I wouldnt want to be caught in-between us two in the middle of the night lol(don't worry, we have a way to identify eachother in the dark so we won't shoot eachother) lol. But if there were kids in the house mine would be locked up with the long guns

First of all, when I'm in bed I don't have no pockets available...if you know what I mean. Listen to Flapjack, that's good advice, early warning is the best warning. Motion sensors, lights, alarm systems and noise are your best bet, first. That will give you time to react, too much can go wrong in your situation especially with kids in the house.

Two golden retrievers as an alarm system and Ruger Speed Six that I have to get completely out of bed to get to works for me.

I have a wife that swings a mean frying pan and dogs so I am lucky and can rest peacefully at night..For your situation a bed holster sounds to be the way to go..You seem to be responsible enough to keep it safe and out of reach..

You forgot gun turrets at each corner of the yard..Just teasing..I agree being prepared and not taken by surprise is the best bet..

I'm really glad to see this many people are prepared for the worst case scenario. I do have a nightstand gun in my bedroom and in a few months will need to figure out a safer way to store it because my son will be walking shortly. To the OP, in no way am I trying to discourage you for protecting your castle but the quality of sleep you would get with a gun in your pocket wouldn't be too great. There have been times when I did sleep with a gun in my pocket, but the circumstances were different and I was not in the comfort of my home. I would suggest trying to figure something out that is safe for your kids, effective and quick for you and most importantly...comfortable. Besides, a J frame is not the most ideal gun for HP......but then again, to each his own.

I keep my 12 mounted on the side of my headboard, and my walther. 380 on my nightstand, both my boys are 17 and 20, and like me they can strip and service any firearm I own since they were 10 like my father taught me. I,LL let my mean Weiner dog chew on em while I decide which one to grab first.

I have to agree with the above post. Carrying a gun while you are sleeping could be a hazardous situation. You want to be somewhat in your right mind when you have to defend yourself. You never know how you might react to a "threat" that isn't really a threat if you are still half asleep. It happens, more often than people think, and the ones it happens to always think the same thing, that it would never happen to them!

If you have kids you have to also take them into account. You can be startled enough while you are sleeping that you think you are dreaming, and it would be tragic if you ended up shooting one of your kids or a significant other because you "thought" you were dreaming!

I keep a Glock 23 with a TLR-1 light nearby, but nowhere close enough that I can grab it from my bed. I like the idea of more rounds than a 5 shot J frame. I also like the idea I have to physically GET UP to get my weapon. But the way my house is laid out, I will have time to do this if there ever was a significant threat anyways.

Got a big strong Black Lab, problem is he's about as mean as a bunny on tranquilizers. That's why the I'm getting ADT.

I need to reactivate my alarm, but it was such a PITA.

The batteries were going dead and the *** wouldn't stop beeping and telling me so... I switched all batteries in the sensors and nothing. No help from the locals, no help from CS. Finally they told me how to disable it (I wont share the technique) after I told them I would destroy their machine and send it to them peice by peice.

False alarms, no phone line, heck not to mention Dominos arrives faster than the police.....

My ****zu is the best alarm system I've got, and all I need to do is feed and walk her.

Maybe things have improved and I need to investigate further just for daytime when I'm away.

I just joined S&W forum not too long ago, so I'm finding all these older threads that catch my eye, and sometimes can't resist adding my own 2 cents. This one in particular is a debate as old as guns and pillows :)

My own lil humble opinion is to each their own, restless sleepers who are prone to moving around in their sleep or having nightmares should probably have the gun they have the most training/range-time with either in a drawer, or just out of reach, or even in one of those 'Sentry' safes with the buttons you don't need to see to punch the code in, but if you sleep like the dead, and especially if you live alone, do what you will. I don't really move in my sleep much, so I keep a Sw1911 in .45acp within reach, and my mossberg 500 with empty chamber and safety on just out of reach.
Why? I live in a rough neighborhood, because i get a nice apartment at an affordable rate. I'm sorry to say about three months after I moved here, sometime last summer I was having a conversation with a friend around 1:30 am and we were interrupted by thirteen pistol shots that happened and were over within 5 seconds or so. I remember grabbing my friend and shoving the both of us to the floor and saying '#@*$ I wish that was fireworks...' and sure enough after a few moments went by, I took a peek out the window and there was a body in the street :-/ Turns out a neighbor of mine (I had never met him or spoke with him at that point) was an NRA member and legal registered gun owner, he awoke to strange invasive noises, grabbed his gun and found himself face to face with two intruders, BOTH had a gun in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Unfortunately all three involved were shot, but the home owner was the only survivor, he was shot in the thigh, but recovered, one of the offenders died in the street trying to escape, and the other died in the hospital. I find this very sad, that two guys could be that desperate. That wasn't the only time i've heard pistol fire since I moved here, and can't wait to move to a more rural area! Until then, I don't want any trouble, but would like to reach a ripe old age before my days are through.

I keep my Glock 21( yes, most all of my other handguns are S&W's) in holster attached to the inside of my bedframe if that makes sense. My 12 gauge with 00 Buck is close......... I dont know if I would like to sleep with a gun though, just me.......

STEEL door frames, STEEL doors, Medecco / Abloy locks, motion lights outside back and front, extra loud horn exterior hron / ADT system ... Do the stuff to keep them out first. Then, we have our firearms.............

I know some say this is expensive, but it keeps 99% of scum bags outside, no firearms needed.

We have six inside cats as 'children'. The noise of them all getting under our bed at once can not be mistaken... alarm! I keep my 642 close by at night - my wife has her 2" 10. If my grandkids are over from GA, everything but my pocketed 642 is locked up. For the brave cats' safety, they stay under the bed for the duration!

Stainz

Would hate to blow one of them away in the darken room. Geee... who would do the cooking & wash then ?

Or remind me, on a regular basis, that I spend way to much on guns, ammo, scotch, and cigars.

Sleeping WITH a gun? That's freaking nuts.

What he said! IMHO if you gotta have a gun in bed with you your are compensating or have some very bad folks looking for you. If it's the later just move, or if it's the former give Dr. Phil a call:D.

I do though have a loaded revolver within 1 foot of my bed and a second also loaded revolver in the same room.

I was thinking more along the lines of trip-wires and Claymores. :D

I have a Model 37 J frame that I slide in between the matress and the box spring in a leather holster set for when I need it.Works good for me.

Sleeping with a gun-- in bed? I don't know about that one. Probably not for me.

Standard home alarm w/sensors on doors & windows, plus a 2nd set of motion sensors hooked up to a 2nd siren that covers the 1st floor and stairwell exclusively (I sleep upstairs).

If someone breaks in, trips the alarm(s), and decides to keep coming, they'll be met with a Surefire light in the face, and 00 buck in the chest.
