Good Evening All; I purchased this fine little .32 today. Grips are diamond around screw, learned upon removing them that the back grip stap is stepped, with the full wood grip surrounding the butt. Serial is on the forward grip strap , the cylinder and the bottom barrel flat. Drift adjustable rear sight and blade front, both are brass. If someone would walk me through the photo process I would post same. Gun has 4.25 inch barrel and is blued.

Added information on this gun, it has a 4.25 inch barrel and gun is blued.

You most likely have a 32 Long Regulation Police revolver. These were I frame guns with a larger than normal stocks, necessitating moving the serial number to the front strap. If so, the ship date would be around 1920-1922.

Give these instructions a try. Make sure you first upload your pictures to your computer.

To attach a picture to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Thread' or 'Reply' and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.

On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labeled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment from your computer.

To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. After selecting the picture, it will return you to the Manage Attachments window, and then click 'Upload'.

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then continue to add up to 5 pictures. When done, close the window to return to the posting screen.

You have a .32 Regulation Police Target, I think. Give us the serial number...X out the last couple of digits...and we'll tell you approximately when it was shipped.

Pictures have to be posted as attachments or from a hosting site like Photobucket. Size them to 800x800 or less and when you post used Go Advanced. Scroll down to Manage Attachments and upload them to the forum. If you use a hosting site, copy the URL to the picture and then insert them into your post by using the Image Icon (mountain with a moon).

I would love to see photos of this one, particularly the front and rear sights. It sounds to me as though the adjustable sights on it now are not factory original. I suspect you have a standard fixed sight RP that was later modified to take a variety of adjustable sight.

The standard RP Target revolvers all had six inch barrels, though special orders could probably be arranged. There were 196 four-inch target revolvers made up from prewar parts in 1957, but that's outside our current frame of reference. From the 4.25 inch barrel (which was a standard length for the .32 Hand Ejector and, after 1917, the .32 Regulation Police), I suspect yours left the factory as a conventional RP sometime in 1923.

Thank you all for the quick and knowledgeable replies. Larry

TPRLOC, the sights you mention are unusual enough to merit their own discussion... AFAIK, Smith only made fixed sight Regulation Police models (those with a notch and groove in the top strap that served as the rear sight) and ones with opposing screws for windage adjustment (these were made of blued steel.) Brass and drift adjustment are a real novelty and should really be examined in detail with the clearest close up pics you can manage. There have been several postings done with directions to do a variety of picture uploads to this board. I know we all would like to see them!

Regards,
Froggie

Yep, that rear sight is definitely post-factory! Note that the standard rear notch and groove are present and that the brass, drift-able rear sight has been dovetailed into a notch cut across the top of the top strap, and looking a lot like the sights found on Colt and High Standard non-target model semi-autos of the time. As for the front sight, I'm going to go with "non-factory" for that one too, but it sure does look good where it is! I think these were well thought out mods, and I bet you get a good sight picture with them.

Regards,
Froggie
