I friend showed me his Model 18 (s/n K417xxx) with a 6" barrel. I couldn't find any reference to this variation (from 4") in the Standard Catalog).

Anyone ever see another Mod 18 w/ 6" barrel?

I recall hearing a rumor that there may be one, but a Model 18 is pretty much a Model 17 with a 4" barrel, called the Combat Masterpiece. Your friend's revolver may have been a Model 17.

S&W production workers also aren't perfect, and have been known to miss-stamp a gun now and again.
A model 18 should definitely have a 4" barrel, was never made any other way. After the Model 18 was discontinued, S&W did make some Model 17's with 4" barrels, but IIRC they had a full lug barrel, not the tapered, non-shrouded barrel that came on the Model 18.
