After 15 years, the end came for Snuggles. Kidney function had dropped significantly per her last blood test. She had 10% vision in her right eye, nothing in her left eye, stone deaf, and canine dementia. I have tried many different dog foods and preparations to encourage her to eat in the last 8 months with little success. Her weight had dropped to 6#, a 25% weight loss. Her fur was in poor condition indicating malnutrition, because she didn't eat enough.

Friday, April 27 I did not work. At 9:00 AM we took the final trip to the vet's office. I made this agonizing decision April 24 after being outside with her for 3 hours while I repaired an air compressor. After I put my tools away, we came in the house, I held her for 2 hours and knew it was time.

She was a feisty, little red fox with a Pomerian tail. During the last week, she walked slowly with a drooping tail that hadn't wagged in 2 weeks. Snuggles had a good life, was a real joy to everyone she came in contact with, and we are going to miss her so much.

It's taken three weeks to make this post, and I'm reliving the agony of Friday morning all over again. The picture is from 2010 when the cataract on her left eye had just started to form.

My Vet assured me that I made the right decision when she told me, "Snuggles is really frail." Snuggles' end came very quickly.

Sorry to hear about Snuggles. Amazing how pets become such a part of life. My experience, the best thing is get back in the saddle - works wonders.

You did the right thing, no matter how hard it was. We owe it to critters that take us into their hearts do make that last gesture of love when the time comes.

She'll be waiting at the bridge along with a whole herd of mine.

Sorry to hear about Snuggles.

You were lucky to have her and she was lucky to have you.

She looks like a sweetie.

Sorry for your loss, just went through that 2 weeks ago with Bear, a rescue that had a few good years with me after some very bad years at the start of his life...

I'm sorry for your loss. That last decision is one of the hardest ones we ever have to make. Try to remember the good times.

Rest in Peace Snuggles. :(

Boy, it seems like this Forum is getting more than its share of losses of this kind.

I have been where you are, and just recently dodged the bullet again (for a little while, anyway) and I am praying you'll be comforted in your loss by the many happy memories you have of that little cutie.

Really, really sorry to hear about Snuggles.
I sure wish dogs lived longer - Much longer.

Over here on the other side of the river, I'm waiting in dread of a similar event. Wallace is my standard rat terrier who is 21 years old. He started to slow down last year, and this year is worse. He doesn't hear or see well, and he's having trouble with his rear legs. He just hasn't gotten to the point where the decision to put him down can be made. He'll go from a day of limping around to one of running and jumping in the back yard. He really amazes me with his ability to keep hanging on. You can just never tell...

My condolences about Snuggles. I know how deeply one of these little folks can work their way into your life.

Please accept my condolences for Snuggles. You have one lasting gift from her. Memories that will be with you forever, cherish them. Frank

Very sorry for your loss Engineer1911. I posted this (Rainbow Bridge) yesterday on another thread - it helped me and the wife deal with our loss - it wouldn't hurt to post it on this thread as well.

Snuggles

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of all its beautiful colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who were sick, hurt or in pain are made whole again.

There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on earth.

So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring and this one runs from the group!

You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take him in your arms and hug him. He licks and kisses your face again and again - and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.

My deepest condolences on your loss.
You did the right thing rest assured.
Best to end their suffering. You will meet up again.
And you both will be in perfect health then.
