So how good is

It's a very good classic rye-recipe Kentucky bourbon. Hits all the right flavor notes, and at a decent proof too. Now $30 is about the standard price here, not on sale, but definitely worth it. One of a group of bourbons, together with a few others like Knob Creek and Evan Williams Single Barrel, that I always recommend if someone asks about a high-quality "typical" bourbon at a good price.

The guy in this video review is quite nerdy, and among my whiskey-drinking friends people either hate his style or think he's hilarious, but his review is relatively current and pretty comprehensive:

I agree with both pawngirl and Absalom. I have bought for a long time and find it consistently good. I drink it neat. A very good whiskey.

Bourbon is a personal taste (as are most things in life) and I do like it. To me it's not the best, but descent. There are others I like better but again, still very good and for the money its worth it.

In the same price category, try Eagle Rare - I like that a bit more.

At that price point, good value for the money. IMO, most bourbons these days ('cept the silly rebranded stuff wearing a vanity label) are pretty good, and EC is right in there. Had an EC Single Barrel yesterday; only problem was that I didn't have enough time to enjoy it properly. Fixed that when I got home :)

My "walkin' around" whiskey is Woodford Reserve and I usually splurge on Angel's Envy.

Picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig this last weekend based on the recommendation of another store patron and must admit that I'm very favorably impressed.

Looks like Four Roses Single Barrel may be next on the list.

So many choices.....so little time.....

I'm probably telling many of you nothing new, but sometimes folks aren't aware they're comparing different styles of bourbon.

Standard rye-recipe bourbons like Elijah will have a rye percentage around the mid-teens.

Eagle Rare is a low-rye recipe with only 8% or so of rye.

Four Roses is the opposite, a high-rye bourbon with around 25% rye depending on the recipe (they have different ones).

So anyone declaring one bourbon "better" than another is usually, knowingly or not, just expressing a personal preference for the level of rye spice he likes. At least as long as other factors, like proof and age, are not significantly different.

Elijah Craig is a good bourbon. Best thing about it is it's readily available. The bourbons I like better are hard to find. Personal favorites are Henry Mckenna 10yr, Weller Antique and Eagle Rare, all hard to find in southern Ohio.

I buy it relatively often since the locals Sams Club always has it at a good price. I really like it. With that said, I've never met a bourbon I did like, so...
