John Boessenecker is a California author who's written many books on gold rush/california old west violence. He's my favorite author and I just finished his latest on Ca. bandit Tirburcio Vasquez. This outlaw was very well documented as opposed to the hard to nail down Juaquin Murietta. Gold Dust & Gunsmoke is my favorite. Vasquez, though only 5'5", used a heavy Colt's Dragoon most of the time. Even as late as his capture in 1874. California might have an image now of hot tubs, wine, cheese, and anti-gun policies but believe me, in the old days it had many gunfights that make the OK Corral look like a game of tiddywinks. these books document just such bloodsoaked encounters.
