Hi fellas, I have some questions for the experts. . .:D
I just aquired a beautiful Model 29-5 CLASSIC. Here are the details:
The Serial # BNF222X
It has the 6.5" full under-lug barrel
It has a glossy black, high polish finish
It has the S&W Hogue style finger groove grips w/medallions and is a square butt I believe
It has a fluted cylinder
I have the box and papers for it but no cleaning utensils
On the box, under the "Spec. Ord." is the number 2177 6544
The product code is 101276
I would appreciate any help on the
Born on date
The approx. value (I am no expert but I would rate it @ 95%)
What the spec. ord. # means
And heck, anything else I might need or like to know !
I don't have any pics of it yet. I just brought it home . . .:^)

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance !

Welcome to the forum.
If it is indeed BNF and not BFN, it is from early '93. It should be a round butt, and easy to tell by the bottom half of the grip frame being inside the Hogue monogrip. They are fine guns and great shooters. I see them selling in the $800 and up range in 95% or better condition when one comes up for sale, and not counting the auction sites where guns sell for more than they are worth 90% of the time.

Thanks Gun. It is a BNF prefix and the grip frame is covered completely by the Hogue with a single screw into the bottom to secure it.
Thanks !

You're welcome.:)

There should be about half of the grip frame's back strap showing on the rear of the monogrip. The BFN prefix was a couple years earlier is why I mentioned it.

Right on

Right on Gun, , :^)
I looked again and you are indeed correct. The top half is visible with bottom half of the backstrap inside. I, ahem, was mistaken, at first glance, I thought it was completely covered.

I have it's older sister also. It is a late '88 or 1989 Model 29-4 with the same black finish. This one has the 8-3/8" full length underlug but, sports an un-fluted cylinder. The backstrap on that one is nearly the full length of the Hogue monogrip. Would that one be a 'square-butt' ? I am kinda wondering now. . . . .. heh,heh--
And yes, it's a GREAT shooter ! My pals at the range all put their guns down and beg to shoot the big Smith. They love knocking down the plates at 75 yrds with it ! W000WH000 . . ..
Thnx, man for your help!!

Yes, that is a square butt on the 29-4. I have owned the 29-6 5" Classic like you have and it was a RB (all the full lug guns with fluted cylinders were RB guns), and I sold this 29-5 Classic Hunter a couple years ago on this forum. It is also a SB gun-

Thanks !

I appreciate the info and the pics are beautiful. I LOVE those Medallion wood combat grips too . . . . .. sweet !

In fact, I would love to pick up a set. The rubber grips are comfortable and work really well in all conditions, but , , , I really like the 'warmth' of the factory wood sets . . :)

Thanks again GUN !
