Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Anyone failing to respond to an LEO’s commands is asking for trouble. Pulling anything remotely appearing to be a firearm is hanging out a “shoot me” sign. Yes, the cop did appear to overreact, esp extra shots, BUT the entire thing would have been avoided had the subject responded appropriately. Years ago the neighbors alarm went off one night when no one was home. I called 911 to report the incident and told the dispatcher I would be on the scene and armed. When the Deputy,s car turned in our lane i holstered my weapon and with my hands clearly visible (and my flashlight showing that, approached the car. Deputy was very cool and professional. I told him I’d walked the perimeter of the house and seen no signs of an entry. Then he and I did the same thing again together. (Dog had apparently knocked over something in the house. Officer was very professional, and when we were done he thanked me for “watching out for my neighbor”. Had I approached him with a firearm in hand I’m pretty sure it could have went bad quickly. LEO’s deal with the scum of the earth Every Single Day., and the cop wants to go home safely at the end of his shift. You do stupid **** and you’ll likely get more problems than you want.

Not a LEO. Retired Prison Guard (not corrections officer thankyou) had to meet the same requirements and qualifications as all the other LEOs in the state. Due to the nature of the assignments, I was armed 75%+/- of my career. Did have to draw, thankfully not fire my side arm, once but trust me I was all primed up and ready to dance. One wrong move by an escaped Maximum security I/m and it could/would have been a different story.
Only one time do I know of a body camera ("it's for your own protection" COWPIES) helping the officer. Most times it allows some Monday Morning Quarterback all the time in the world to find fault with the actions of an officer that he/she had to make in seconds.
After watching the video I would like to think I wouldn't have shot, BUT he pulled a gun and I'm thinking I would have. "It's a B.B. gun" Right and I'm Francis the talking Jack ***. Ya more rounds while the suspect was on the ground is problematic, but hay the officer just got clobbered with a ton of adrenalin. Not only does he have tunnel vision, all his fingers have turned to thumbs, and his brain is screaming threat, he's alone, in the dark with an unknown. Plus according to the video the suspect was on the weapon, moving around. Was the officer supposed to wiat and see if he got shot at?
Sad day all the way around.
One sure fire way to avoid this is when an officer tells you to show your hand drop whatever is in your hands, that's drop not toss away and show your hands. THE FIRST TIME HE TELLS YOU!

Indeed we would.
Awful situation. Definitely murder, also, don't allow your kids out late at night on a highway with a BB gun that looks like a real gun. Terrible parenting played a role in this as well.
