Something to think about

We've hit or been hit by 6, 7 or more deer out here. I've honestly lost count. I've always been able to limp home and repair the damage and the deer have been able to bound away.
The repairs have been headlights, marker lights, parking lights, grill and pounding sheetmetal back out.
Since cell phones don't work out here, ya can't call anyone anyway. If I could, I certainly wouldn't tell the police that I'm carrying, it's not required.

There is a area less than a mile from us that has had countless deer hits. About two months ago they finaly put up a yellow warning sign with a deer painted on it. The sign has lights that flash outlined on it, you cant miss the sign. I think I have counted 5 hit deer laying by the sign since they put it up!! One morning there were TWO dead deer laying a few feet apart on each side of the sign!

I had a co-worker who went through a similar incident. He lives out in the country and struck a deer with his truck, then pulled over to call it in. He carries concealed and informed them over the phone. When the officer arrived he noted the damage and that the deer was alive but struggling on the side of the road. It wasn't going to make it so they decided it would be best to put the deer out of it's misery.

From what my co-worker said, the officer was really nervous and his hands were shaking. He fired his Glock twice and missed. Co-worker asks if would be ok if he unholstered his weapon and took a shot at it, which the officer nodded yes and agreed. I suppose this sort of thing would probably only happen in his small town, but still always a good thing to inform you are carrying. Plus it's the law in my state.

It's the same situation in my small town. I guess it depends a lot on where people live as to how they handle this situation. Here, I see about as many people OC at Walmart as I'm sure there are people CC. I still choose to err on the side of caution. We are not required to inform here but it is recommended.

We live at cedar city utah. It could be said that this is right in the heart of the west/old west. We do have both CC and OC. Yet I believe I can count on two or three fingers at the most, times I have seen OC in this town AND it is legal! Then I read of you guys reporting back east and elsewhere of somewhat commonly seeing people at walmart etc pack. I must need to get out more! We have lived here 9 years and I will say I have seen it the two or three times.

Maybe it's me but is it really that hard to grab the antlers and put the muzzle square against the deer's forehead?

May I ask why one would call the police because they hit a deer?

I've hit more than my share, and have yet to see a need to bother the law enforcement community about it.

It's a good question. A lot of people aren't covered for deer accidents under their car insurance policy. It's covered if you have Comprehensive Coverage. Some insurance companies will take your word on filing it and leave it at that, but some will give you a hassle about it. Having a police report helps, especially if you've been claiming more than one or two a year.

When dealing with cops, I've found that being completely honest works best. Some don't agree. But it works for me.
What does that mean?

If it means that you shouldn't lie if he asks if you're armed, I agree.

If it means you should VOLUNTEER information UTTERLY unrelated to the matter at hand, which you are NOT REQUIRED BY LAW to disclose, I disagree 110%.

Letter of the law, PERIOD.

The bigger issue here is the fail of 1) having a Facebook (or myspace, twitter, etc) presence, and 2) mentioning a gun on it. No matter what your settings, it is WAY too easy to find you based on a variety on info. Persec rules.

I wouldn't post on Facebook even if I'd never even SEEN a gun.

I don't care what your cat did last night, and 99% of what I do wouldn't interest 99% of Facebook users.

The VAST majority of Facebook users are FAR less interesting than they THINK they are.

I knew I could count on you to stir the pot as always.

We disagree. I'm not a cop hater like you. If I can help the cop feel more comfortable, so be it.

I advocated obeying the law as written.

For some people that's clearly not enough.

Not to "stir the pot" even more, but there can be a huge difference between the "letter" of the law, and the "spirit" of the law. I think that what was being suggested is that they follow the spirit of the law, against the law? perhaps, but us "old timers" with common sense often realize that the LETTER of the law is not always right.

Thousands of hours and millions of dollars are spent studying the "spirit" of single laws. I have neither the time nor the inclination for that, especially when it benefits NOBODY, and in fact may ENDANGER me.

Ohio requires me to notify (hopefully to change eventually), WHEN ARMED. I don't like that, but I'll do it.

Naturally, that's not good enough, and some cops (personal experience) and supporters demand that you notify when NOT armed. Not going to happen.

I have a duty to know and obey the law to the extent that I don't violate it. I have no duty to obey "spirits" or random whims. Nor do I have any desire to do so in the hope of avoiding speeding tickets etc. The way to not get speeding tickets is to drive the speed limit.

Now some people consider that attitude akin to pledging allegiance to al Qaeda, but I simply don't care.

As said by others in MI... You're required by law to inform the officer.
I personally have no issue with that. Their goal is the same as mine.
Go home.
It's a courtesy. Even if it wasn't required in MI, I would inform them anyways as a courtesy. Is it really worth NOT putting their mind at ease?

Think of it this way... If they get a little hostile when you tell them...how do you think they'll react if they find out you're carrying/armed and you didn't mention it?
I know laws vary state to state. I respect law officers and the job they do. It's a courtesy thing for me...
Yes, I suppose I may feel different if I lived in MA or CA or another gun grabbing area...

Mad..more importantly, glad you're ok!

I retired before citizens having a concealed weapon permit was a common thing. If I were on the street today I would prefer to be told someone I was dealing with was legally armed. While I doubt it would have changed things much, no street cop appreciates surprises.

It seems some think there is a law that will cover every event in life. I bet a cop can follow you in traffic for just a couple minuets and find something that he could pull you over to discuss. Obviously they dont. Now A, Would we want them to? B, Are they negligent by not doing there job to the letter of "The law"? C, Would you want to live in a place like that? D, Would any cop even want to be a cop? E, Wouldn't that area just about stop moving?
I guess some could say we have laws for people that have NO common sense. Some will say we have many laws so if the law pulls you over or wants you for something and he cant make that original reason stick, that there is always some other law he can find to warrant the stop or arrest.
Here is a stupid incident to show what I mean. When I was a guard my chief at that time was a retired chicago cop on his second career. Usually he was a good guy and a friend. This was early on a Christmas morning. I was manning the main gate at our huge deserted plant. Usually 4 or 5 thousand people there but today I was the only living soul there.
Here come the chief whipping through the gate with his wife technically breaking a rule as she wasnt a employee and had I wanted to I could have kept her from entering but he didnt even slow down to give me the chance. Technically, not stopping also was a violation as he wasnt in uniform. It looked like they had probley been out partying and never went to bed as this was right at dawn. I had my cover off and was leaning back in my swivel chair watching the gate as he flew by. He looked over and thumped his bald plate. I knew him well and knew he would try to climb my frame for not wearing my hat on the way out and I started to boil.
A few minuets later his wife drove out in a different car. He followed her and pulled over and got out to start bawling me out. Werch, you aint wearing yer hat! Yeah? Well I have a order you just signed a couple weeks ago here saying that us guards could now take our hats off when there is nothing going on now! (We had fought hard and long for that). This was about 1970 when most departments slacked off and you started seeing baseball caps etc. That stopped him for a couple seconds and I could see the wheels spinning in his cop bald head going into high gear going to get me on some other infraction since that one wasnt going to work. He snapped his fingers in and declared, Well ya looked to relaxed!!
Now I had had it! I snapped too and lost it! Okay George! Lets have it out here and now! It`s Christmas!! I challenged him to a fight! Now, that was dumber than dumb on my part as I was throwing a good job away plus George was also a ex professional boxer! It stopped him. He said Christmas? It`s Christmas! Like it just dawned on him. Then he apologized profusely! He kept apologizing until it actually got embarrassing to me. Not only that, he apologized every time he seen me for the next month! He was a great guy.
Sorry for the thread drift and long story, but in this world you have to have common sense and laws wont replace it. There are many many laws, and I honestly believe there is some thinking that the reason they exist is A, for revenue, and B, for tools for LE to have to stop or arrest someone when what they really want you for wont wash!
