On Sat ., I opened a can of Spam, the 25% Less Sodium sort that I buy when I eat Spam at all.

I thought the color was a little more pale than what I expected, but figured it was a matter of color variance in production lots or a new process at the packer.

The can wasn't distended, and I had no other sign of anything wrong.

So, I warmed a couple of slices and made a sandwich. No problems.

I put the rest in the refrigerator and ate it today. But something kept nagging at me about that color change & I called Hormel, the maker.

Sure, this is what I should have done in the first place. But I was tired and preoccupied and had had no ill effects over the weekend and it's now Tue. (Their Customer Service line was presumably closed on Saturday.)

Well, the lady at Hormel asked if the meat was more whitish than the usual pink. Yes, it was.
That means that the can probably had a leak and somehing was wrong.

I'd thrown the can out, so couldn't get her the can lot number or whatever she wanted the can for.

That was about two hours ago, and I feel okay, just a little bloating that may be due to having had that meal.

I have a message in to my doctor, who is just back from pregnancy leave, and she should return the call in an hour or so. I hope she can tell me what I might logically fear if the meat was contaminated.
They put a lot of preservatives in Spam, inc. salt . And I did heat it in a skillet. That may have killed some germs.

I did something extremely foolish, and am usually very wary of such things. But the stuff is not deep pink, anyway, and I thought I'd just gotten a production batch that varied in color.

I opened another can, and it is indeed a darker, more definite pink. So, my can was probably not as it should be. Again, it was not swollen, or I'd have been immediately leery.

The reason I'm posting this is to warn you that if you see a whitish or very pale pink in Spam, don't eat it

I hope I'll be okay. I got though the past several days after ingesting the two slices on Saturday, so maybe God looks after fools and I won't be affected. It seems as if anything too bad was wrong,I'd have noticed it by now.

Just a friendly warning for those of you who eat this product.

ANY canned goods can be tainted by a pin hole.

Wish me luck. And be wary of pale Spam!

We're you recently trying to kill any possible bacteria in your gut with copious amounts of alcohol?

:D

It happens. I remember eating a bunch of frozen chicken nuggets that I thought tasted funny and had an odd texture but I kept eating anyway. Eventually, after a dozen or so, I decided to check and sure enough they were all raw to some extent.some only a little in the center, others probably more than 50% raw.

There have been other instances as well

I think if you were going to get bacteria related food poisoning, you would have symptoms by now. A few years ago, I ate a cheeseburger out on a party fishing boat. just about the time we came back in, several hours later, I became sick as a dog. I was lucky to find a porta john in a construction site along the highway on the drive home. Sickest I have ever been. Symptoms passed by the next morning. Bad food can do a number on you.

So, did you have symptoms?

No alcohol drunk at all. I may drink a cup of tea, in hopes the tannins and sugar may kill some germs. Probably not.

I am now close to three hours after eating the bad Spam and am okay. How long might it take symptoms to appear?

That's what I want to ask the doc if she ever returns my call.

Wow glad your ok. I am pretty sure your Doc will tell you throw al cans out. And don't buy it any more.

The alcohol comment was a joke based on the amount of spelling and grammar errors.

No, no symptoms. Chicken must have been bacteria free. I also once ate partially cooked or just bad meat from the supermarket hot food section. That time I had a funny feeling stomach...not pain...just a weird off feeling..and I had to go to the bathroom a bunch of times before I felt better.

I love runny eggs....very runny... which is essentially half raw. I eat two every morning. Never had problems. Love raw oysters and those have bacteria too. Eat cured Salmon constantly, which is raw salmon salted and let sit for a few days.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't feel sick by now you're probably (I'm not a doctor) fine. All the food related stomach problems I've had always happened within an hour or two after eating

Hmm, I've never eaten Spam and in was just telling some friends that I'm gonna try it one of these days. I'll be sure and pay attention to the color when I try it.

My original post contained numerous spelling errors. That's because I was trying to post before something happened to my long message to eliminate it before I could post. That happens here, fairly often. When that worries me, I post, then try to proofread and make corrections before many read the new post.

I'm not too worried about the 2-3 slices that I ate Sat. I'm worried about the rest that I ate today, a larger amount.
