SPAM under lock and key in NYC stores...

I've always like Spam, especially on sandwiches. My WWII Seabee dad hated the stuff and wouldn't touch it. Said he had a lifetime share of it in the service and wasn't eating it again.

LOL. I posted the wrong link to the article (now corrected); it was to a "Related article" from 2015 on Canadians in The Devil's Brigade in WWII, (a good read, although the internal links to audio interviews don't work now) which included this:
"...They trained in Helena Montana....Some thought the Americans had better food, that is if you call SPAM a delicacy..."!

"Was in CVS today and they had certain brands of EYE DROPS in a locked area. OK, what is so special about eye drops? Do you huff them, snort them, fill up a syringe and shoot up, boil and inhale? Inquiring minds want to know."

It's great for slowly poisoning someone, usually a husband. Seriously.

When I lived in Harrisburg Pa. (85-92) Baltimore was a great day or overnight trip to Inner Harbor........NO more!!!

Got a 4lb pork shoulder in the slow cooker right now for pulled pork later.
Still only about $4.25 a lb.

Haven't had Spam in years...... as a kid we'd have fried Spam maybe once a month in the winter.

Canned Cornbeef is good to go ( Dad liked it, so he's open a can every now and then.

I like those little 1lb canned hams for emergency storage. Goes well with fried cabbage onions and carrots.... and those small potatoes.

Most of those canned meats have a 5 year "Best By...." date.

Maybe the real question here is..........why are people desperate enough and hungry enough to be shoplifting Spam?

Spam is a staple in my pantry. I always have a few cans around. Great as a emergency food and the stuff will last forever.
I'm kinda indifferent towards it. I neither love or hate it, but it does make a nice change now and then. I think this thread has inspired me to whip up some Spam and eggs for supper tonight. ;)

I detested Smap as a kid. It may well be that my declining pickiness would allow me to eat it, at least depending on how was prepared. I don't really care to try.

Deteriorating cities: Had an appointment with a specialist in a very rarified medical speciality/practice as part of my transplant clearance. We got along well, in no small part because he recognized the truck stop from what I was wearing a T shirt (Dysart's, you either know or you don't) and told me it was one of his favorite places to eat. He grew up in NYC and was recently in Seattle, which he described as too dirty and crime infested to visit again. I only go west of MP 52 if I am paid to.

Speaking of Baltimore.......
As a young troop I spent some time at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in 1973. I went to Baltimore once. Even then it struck me as the dirtiest, unfriendliest city I'd ever been in. I didn't bother to go back.

Our pantry has about 10 cans of spam, but we seldom eat it. It's really for emergencies when we run low on real food. It's like primers and reloads - will last forever.

I once lived in western MD, and was a fairly frequent visitor to APG and Balmor. Even 50 years ago, it was a nasty place and I was always happy to leave. One visit to The Block was more than enough.

The recipes for good food don't include maps. It can be found anywhere.

One of the best pizzas I ever had was in a bowling alley in Rantoul, Illinois.

In a place with countless New Mexican- Mexican Restaurants,
One of the best is found at a Pharmacy.
Duran Pharmacy in Old Town.
Expect to wait for a seat.
No Spam in sight!

When I first came to the US I worked with a guy who had lived in Baltimore. The only one of his comments I can put here was something about hoping for the news that the city had burned down from end to end.
