You might take a look around for an ankle style holder. I have a friend at work that carries his back-up on one ankle and spare mags on the other, in a carrier.
I'll play the part of oddball. I only occasionally carry a spare since the vast majority of the scenarios I can imagine will resolve one way or the other without reloading. Yeah, I'll be sorry when the zombie apocalypse begins, but other than that, I don't anticipate a protracted gun fight.
Always, magazines are the weak link in all autos having a spare to remedy a malfunction just makes sense.
On the belt for full size mags
Off side front pocket for compacts
Spare mag 0% of the time.
The problem with playing those odds is that you're betting with the thing most likely to fail and render your gun all but useless. The solution is so simple and easy that it makes no sense to me to go without a spare.I've never been an LEO, and I've not been carrying for all that long. But I have put a great deal of thought into it. It's all about degrees of preparedness. I carry everywhere. But I don't carry a spare mag. I don't expect I'll ever need to pull my gun. But according to my research, the vast majority of defensive encounters are resolved without firing a shot. I have 10+1. I am sure that even if I carried 2 or 3 full size mags as spares, someone would say It isn't enough. James Yeager carries 3 guns, and probably spare mags for them all. I think being prepared, for me is more about proper mindset, situational awareness, and staying out of harms way.
