trying to get in the habit of carrying a back up mag. Just curious how many of you actually do, and also how you carry it. I am mostly dressed in business attire with a shirt and tie.

Always, magazines are the weak link in all autos having a spare to remedy a malfunction just makes sense.
On the belt for full size mags
Off side front pocket for compacts

2 spares all the time in the same place on my belt as at work. As WSR said most of the things that can go wrong with a semiautomatic are caused by magazine malfunctions.

Depending on what you carry I'm sure there are options for hiding the magazine in plain sight

One spare double stack or 2 single stack . How I carry depends . Pocket knife belt pouch works well at times when to much craps is carried along and some brands can turn horizonal too . I carry my spare mags on my weak side and double stack most times go in my left front pocket top side down and always stays that way turned the right way too .

One spare mag wearing OWB holster...

Two spare mags wearing NRA vest...

Yes.

Carry a double stack most times and the gun iwb so I can't bring myself to do the magazine iwb as well, but that method is an option and YMMV.

So I carry the magazine on the weak side either on the belt owb with the shirt untucked or cover garment or else in the front pocket. For the pocket I use a Desantis mag packer, but there are several pocket magazine carriers to choose from to include all-leather offerings.

For a shirt and tie with no jacket, I'd consider using front pocket method.

I always carry 2 spare mags in the same position that i carry them while on duty ... you will fight the way you train ... They are in an IWB mag pouch and are practically invisible when wearing a loose shirt.

In the summer with shorts and t-shirt I carry my semi IWB and a spare magazine in my off side front pocket. I use a Desantis holder.

You might take a look around for an ankle style holder. I have a friend at work that carries his back-up on one ankle and spare mags on the other, in a carrier. Not sure how you carry your weapon but in a suit this may work out for you.

That would drive me nuts. I'm just imagining them clacking together every time he takes a step

I'll play the part of oddball. I only occasionally carry a spare since the vast majority of the scenarios I can imagine will resolve one way or the other without reloading. Yeah, I'll be sorry when the zombie apocalypse begins, but other than that, I don't anticipate a protracted gun fight.

Very interested to compare answers here with those in the current 1911 thread where some felt that if eight rounds doesn't cover you, you weren't coming out on top anyway. ;)

No matter the firearm, I carry spare ammo...

Its more about having the proper tool to fix the most likely problems a auto will have than having more bullets

Safariland Model 123 Horizontal mag holder magazine lies on top of my belt....weak side...cover flap towards 9 O'clock...... bullets facing down. Rides like it's not even there with an 8rd 3913 magazine..........

99.999999% of the time...... most/I pray none; confrontations will be resolved with what's in your firearm......but "stuff" happens"..... and

at worst.... it might be nice to have a reload when it's over....vs. an empty or almost empty gun.......cus it ain't over till the fat lady sings....

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words:

Fits fine under a suit coat.

Universal nylon carrier, velcro flap closure, horizontal, off-hand at 10:00 for pistol or double HKS carrier at 2:00 for revolver. Always take them.

My most used EDC is a Bond Derringer loaded with two 3 inch .410 PDX rounds. I know many will scoff at carrying only a two shot handgun. However, my biggest concern is a mugger on the street or a car jacker. Given the typical distances at which such encounters take place, two shotgun rounds ought to be enough. I have found the gun to be 100% reliable. Don't have any worry about misdeeds since there is no magazine.
