Spare parts

I know there are some proprietary parts on this rifle.
I believe I read on here where somebody got a new extractor from S&W. What I wonder is if some of the parts could be replaced with standard parts.

I know the bolt design itself is proprietary. Could you use a standard (DPMS, Armalite, etc.) extractor, firing pin, ejector, springs, gas rings, etc?

Just a feeling but I doubt they would go through the trouble of making the small bolt parts when they could just get them from a supplier. Kind of like 6.8, 6.5 and x39 AR bolts all use standard parts as far as I know.

Then again, all the .308 manufacturers may well go to that extreme.

I would just buy a Battle Arms ambi safety.

Give it time. Maybe they will get surplus eventually but that's why I started this thread. I know the stripped bolt is out of the question and neither an Armalite or DPMS will fit.

What I do know will fit is the ejector roll pin. It's standard diameter not sure on exact length.

The firing pin looks almost if not identical to an Armalite. The extractor is hard to tell but it looks similar too. The ejector looks identical also. It shouldn't be too hard to find gas rings. What I'm getting at is if people have these parts and could compare them to the M&P10 it would help.

On my next order I'm going to pick up some spare cheap parts like the ejectors, springs, pins and different gas rings. The extractor is a little expensive to buy both a DPMS and Armalite pattern and not have either fit then have to try to return or sell them.

I know their is a thread on ar15.com comparing the Smith bolt next to a DPMS or Armalite or both. I've tried to find it again but can't to save my life.

I think this is a marketing issue, as ill conceived as it is. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy with my 10 so far. I did think that parts would be coming down the pike, alas they have not. I guess time will tell. I think S&W is screwing the pooch on this one. Two of my buddies opted out of the 10 and went the DPMS route, because of this issue.

The spike in .308 rifle demand I think personally came when 5.56 parts were scarce. Then the .308 maybe got scarce so I think they are allocating most if not all parts to new rifles plus keeping some for warranty issues. I think if they had the parts to sell they would. Maybe I'm wrong.

Realistically the only other out of the box rifle I was considering was the new Armalite. They have parts, pricey but they're there. The only drawbacks I remember was their weird gas tube length and it seems harder to find barrels and rails. I don't believe they have the aftermarket support like DPMS. Then what you have left is Ruger, Sig, LMT, Larue, KAC, etc. They don't really do parts support either.

So if you don't have a mint, you're going to build your own and may or may not have support if companies that made your parts fold. I trust S&W more for warranty support. The rifle just works out of the box.
