This past Tuesday we had to take our 3 year old female Maltese cat to the vet as she was vomiting clear liquid. We had a suspicion that she could have had ingested parts of a exotic Christmas flower arrangement and was toxic.

The Vet did extensive testing, X-rays as well as bloodwork and nothing in particular showed up other than one particular elevated chemistry value that I don't recall the name of. She was put on iv fluids to flush her system and was not getting better, on Thursday we had a big snow storm that pretty much shut down the county for 2 days so the vets office was not answering telephone calls and was operating on a skeleton staff.

We finally got a call from them this afternoon and as of this writing our kitty had just had major surgery to remove many many inches of sewing thread from her intestinal tract. The prognosis is iffy at this point and she is just coming out of sedation and we are waiting for a call to update us.

The call came and our cat has awakened and it is just a matter of time now to. see how she tolerates her surgery.

My wife was wondering why she found and empty sewing machine thread bobbin in one of the boxes of her sewing notions.

Terry, I'm glad they could remove that and hope for a full recovery.

We had a cat that had a fondness for chewing plastic grocery bags. It got to where we couldn't leave one lying about. She stopped eating and drinking. Her abdomen was distended and she was showing discomfort.

The vet removed a wad of plastic the size of a golf ball from her intestines.

We currently have a kitten that likes eating pizza boxes.

To quote Rosanne Rosannadanna: "It just goes to show ya! It's always something!"

I hope the cat is okay. Amazing how some of us will pay out the end to have our pets repaired, but pass on buying something because we don't want to spend the cash. My dog used to eat cardboard; toilet paper rolls were a treat for her. Vet said it would digest okay, so she'd get a roll once in a while. (We just got a card in the mail yesterday with her paw print and signed by all the girls in the vet's office. I hope your cat is gonna be okay.) At 11:19 AM today it'll be 33 days...

When I was a teenager, a very looong time ago, my buddy had a cat that liked string. We would let the cat swallow the string, 5 or 6 ft of it, and then pull it back out.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Terry, hope you get good news on your furry friend.

I recommend a book named "Dewey the Library Cat. It is the true and most fascinating story of the most famous cat ever...all over the world. People traveled from all over the world to go see this cat.

I can personally vouch for Dewey, he was my hometown library cat, Spencer, Iowa. I'm not a cat person and most cats just ignore me, not Dewey, he had to make me a friend.

Years ago I had a cat with a fondness for eating dental floss and the like. One day she was coughing, and I noticed a bit of curling ribbon sticking out of her mouth. Yup, I grabbed hold of it and pulled it back out. She'd swallowed about two feet of it. There were no apparent lasting ill effects from it.

Pawngal, You get multiple likes for sharing this. I'm jealous. I would love to have had the opportunity to meet him and the kind lady that rescued him on that cold winter morning. I doubt that she had any idea what a wonderful friend he would be to so many people, young and old.

Some of the responses in here talk about some of the bizarre things a cat will eat. I expect that not many people know that Dewey was fond of eating rubber bands. He lived for 19 years but could have lived longer if not for that. it finally killed him.

2 of my 3 cats include rubber bands in the list of things they would like to eat. We have to be careful because these guys are always on the lookout. They don't miss much.

Any update on your kitty?

Enquiring cat lovers want to know.

Thanks for asking Rusty,

Went to the vet hospital yesterday to visit Miss Purrl

Had the opportunity to speak with the vet who gave us a narrative of the surgery, and of the the sewing thread creating a sawing motion cutting open her small intestine which allowed the contents to spill into her abdominal cavity in 2 places as well as bruising her small intestine internally which can cause the intestine to die. The vet, a lady I would guess in her mid fifties a well seasoned professional in her field gave Miss Purrl a 60% chance of survival.

Currently they are going to re-evaluate her tomorrow morning. Will provide an update as it comes to us.

Thanks to you all who have shared thoughts prayers and comments during our troubled time. It certainly is heartwarming knowing that others support us from afar.

YIKES!!!!! I'd pass that on to my gf's mum (a 93 y-o certified "mad cat lady") but she'd have a caniption. We rarely think of the things lying around the house that catch our cats' attention.

If I was on Facebook, I could start "#prayersformisspurri", but as it is, it'll just be prayers from myself and Smudge.

We received "the call" last evening around 8:20 from the vet's daughter stating they had drawn blood earlier on Miss Purrl and had already analyzed it in preparation for this mornings reevaluation. Whatever the results, wasn't good and they were setting up the surgery suit and would let us know their findings in about an hour. Two hours and twenty minutes later they called to inform us that Miss Purrl had passed, but valiantly, after she crashed the second time the vet said her heart just plain stoped and she decided to cease the life saving efforts fearing there would be further life issue damage.

Certainly going to miss her as she was quite the cat.

Again, thank you all for your expressions of concern.
