Went to the store for some cans of beer for a road trip. 12 pack was 12.99 and the 24 was 14.99. Should I have bought 2 of the 12 packs?

Depends.... if it is for after you arrive then go for the 24 pack. If it's for consumption along the way, don't buy it at all.

24 hours in a day 24 cans in a case, not original but it does make sense.
12 divided by 12.99 = 92 cents per beer. 24 divided by 14.99 = $1.66 per beer. So, buying the 12 packs is the obvious choice.

Actually, I'm starting to question my theory. If we are talking about cheap beer, he would be better off buying one 12 pack. This will save him money on aspirin and toilet paper.

Years ago when I sacked groceries and stocked in a store at home they would have an item .11 cents apiece or 2 for .23 cents and guess what some people would go for. No computers then.

I don't know if they have it everywhere, but guys around here are wild about a generic beer called "Beer Thirty". It is a generic, low cost beer in, you guessed it, a handy, dandy 30 pack!

I often notice that young cashiers at stores have very low mental math skills. I guess that comes from always having a calculator or computer handy. I doubt they did the volumes of math problems and recitations of multiplication tables us old geezers did.
I often play mental math at markets, seeking to beat the machine. If it rings up $1.67, I know I'm due 33 cents from two 1s, or $3.33 from a 5.
If the tab is $2.30, I might hand them a 5 and a nickel so that the only coins I get back are quarters. The nickel befuddles them. I always explain that lets me get quarters only back. I get an incredible look, like- "HOW could he know!?!? I just tell them to punch it in, and it will work. They usually show a delighted smile like I did a magic trick.
Another good trick-
The tab is $10.81.
Hand them a 20, a 1, and 6 cents. When they give you "the look", explain that your change will be a 10 and a quarter because you hate ones and small coins. They won't believe you till they see the screen.
If they overpay when making change, you may have to fight to return some.
I used a computer once to figure the best way to buy to buy cheaper beer. 30 years later I'm still trying to figure out the answer.
