Squirrel hunting tools of the trade (pic)...

RWS Diana 34 P, or my Ruger 77-22, or my remington 870, or my Fathers old single shot Remington. Just depends on how I'm feeling. Season starts here mid October. Case mini trapper skins them.

I use a Savage .17 HMR with a BSA scope configured with a Bullet Drop Compensator. Head shots at 130 yards! I'm amazed at the accuracy of the 93R17 FVSS.

Our season starts this Saturday here in WVA. I am really looking forward to hunting this fall. I have some "new" old guns to try this year. I have a CZ 452 varmint in 22LR, a BRNO no. 2 (CZ 452 grandfather) in 22 LR and a brand new CZ455 with a custom Boyd's stock on it. I have not had the time to shoot the 455 yet.

My son is going to use a BRNO no.1 made in 1950 that he bought this year. He is excited as well. The weather is sup[posed to be nice this weekend as well.

I haven't made the time to hunt at all in the last few years, however, I've been thinking that I really need to this fall. I've always hunted with a 12ga or 20ga shotgun and shot ranging from #4-#6. I've always used a shotgun for two reasons. First is safety. The area I hunt is pretty heavily populated and launching a .22lr into orbit while shooting at a treed squirrel could be dangerous. The second reason is that its not terribly uncommon to flush a grouse or two and I like having the option to take a shot at a bird should I so desire.

Now, the next question is what to do after you kill and clean 'em. Anyone got any favorite recipes?

I've had my Remington Model 33 for almost 15 years now or so. I can't even tell you how many squirrels it has taken. I know its the most accurate .22 rifle I have owned. I want to take my .32 CVA out this year if I can. I haven't seen much for squirrels at all this year anywhere so hopefully I have some, but at the very least we have a couple of cottontails nearby.

this became my choice decades ago.
accurate, versatile, and I like the rifle better than most 22's

What round is that? I have been thinking of getting another .30-30 someday and trying to make up like the old .22 accelerator load, but I was never quite sure how to do that myself, I haven't found anything in my loading manuals.

Usually its a cz 455 .22 LR but this year I think it will be the Ruger 77/22 Stainless with Green-Insert "Boat Paddle" Stock that I bought for $200 a month or two ago :D. It shoots like a dream.

Oly cow. TC contender. 10" 32-20 with a 2x scope. Ruger 10-22 with peep sight. Savage 22/410 over under. And for my big meat gun, Savage model 24V. 222/20 gauge. Usually its whatever hand gun I have on me. I shot a few with my match grade 45, some with my 25-7, Hugh Standard Victor, Buckmark with a custom barrel and red dot sight.

I love to just squirrel. I do not like cleaning them.

PISTOLS?

During college, off campus & NOT on the food plan I fed myself often with grouse/squirrel/rabbit taken with a Ruger MKl target pistol while cross country skiing. More recently while stand hunting for hogs a Ruger M77 all weather varmint in 22 mag & a Nikon 3x9 bushmaster made head shots easy on feeder raiders. With the 22 ammo issues I picked up a vintage
(pre serial #'s) Winchester mdl 131 mag fed bolt action that will handle ANY size 22, & like the idea of trying quiet 22 shorts, like the CB caps. I haven't tried my new to me 20 ga Beneli montfeltro, or the Winchester 94xtr 22 mag lever with open sights yet either. For knives it was usually my trusty OLD Gerber trout & bird fixed blade, or the USA made Schrade sharpfinger, a light weight hand pruner to cut off the feet. My wife WAS a very conservative eater when we first met, now she enjoys much more variety and about any type game EXCEPT squirrel.
