Now that winter is really here, what are you people that are in the worst of it wearing outdoors to not only stay somewhat warm but also alive?
Staying inside is of course the best choice, but when you have to go out, what have you found that works best?
Here in Va. It's single digit which is cold for us and I wear poly unders with wool or poly mids and a wind proof wool outer shell.
Finally get to wear my mad bomber which is fantastic for the head.
Anything that is working better out there?
Inquiring minds want to know, I hate being cold!
My main problem areas are the hands and feet.

Silk under wear, the long version, polly thermal long underwear, wool pants, wool vest, over a wool sweater. A wool coat that is about 75 yeas old worn by my grandfather. the elbows have been repaired and there is a 3 corner patch on the back; its heavy and warm. on my head I wear a wool polyline wool cap. leather mittens with a poly blend insert. silk sox's wool sox's in felt pac boots. that just to walk to the street to get the mail.

Browning Silvertip down coat

Howdy,
Back in the eighties I bought a Browning, Silvertip, down coat. It was what the game wardens were wearing around here. It about made me stroke out to spend that kind of money on a coat, but when temps push zero I never regret it.
If you put it on when temperatures are 30 or above it will turn you into a pile of ash. I don't get it out often but this year it is getting some use.
That would be for social outings, anything else is long johns and insulated coveralls with snowmobile boots.
Keep warm!
Mike

Actually nothing special. No long johns (unless I'm plowing out the driveway) Just a good coat with hood and a pair of gloves. Guess I'm used to the cold after all these years.

Thanks! I feel like a real Wuss now. Lol
I'm listening hard to all you in the great white north( except you Mydog) ha!
Being retired I can usually opt to stay inside, but I still like to hunt and roam the woods and I don't want to curtail that pleasure just because its cold.

not cold here now but I snowshoe in the winter up in the mountains..I wear thin poly for a base layer including my feet and then add as needed from there depending on how cold it is going to get...when I lived in Idaho I always carried a heavy down parka in my car in case I got stranded...we spent the night in my truck one time at -20 after it broke down while hunting...that parka paid for itself

Depends on what you're doing, for sure. With decent activity you can go fairly light with an emphasis on wicking and breathability. If you want to sit still in the extreme cold, good silk or poly stuff underneath, then wool, wool, wool. Lots of new miracle stuff around, but I prefer wool. Good stuff - American made. Filson double mac cruiser, Johnson Woolen Mill 28 oz. wool pants (if they're not $150.00, they're not the good ones!) Pac boots, leather, pile-lined bomber hat with coyote fur trim. Leather chopper mitts with heavy wool liners (don't fall for the oxymoron "warm gloves"). I don't mind the expense, because my life might depend on it - not much forgiveness at -40.

My granmother was born in russia in the 1880s. I remember her telling me how some of the men would wrap their feet with rags, pour water on them, and run outside. They would instantly freeze and the iced rags would actually insulate your feet!

Staying warm starts with pac boots (usually Sorels, but I have a pair of Rockys now) and a hat. Unless I'm skiing or motorcycling, I usually don't wear long johns. When I do, it's merino or poly. Cotton holds moisture, which can kill you.

Carhartts or jeans, sometimes fleece-lined. Wool pants if I'm going to be out a while. A t-shirt, a shirt, maybe some fleece, covered up usually by a Filson double mac, a lined Carhartt canvas jacket or, if I need to dress up a bit, a wool topcoat.

I put on my long johns this morning plus a down Columbia parka to go to my physical therapy and good thing as it's 12 below out and their heat failed.
I'm big on Carhart products too and wear their bibs and vest under a parka. Browning insulated shooting gloves are warm too if you need to be able to handle things like guns.
I worked HVAC and refrigeration and you learned to layer to work both indoors and outside.

I like those soft quilted looking vests. I like the ones that have a collar but those are hard to find. The type does seem to get the zipper stuck a lot. I like them exta long down the back. In all but the bitterest of cold I am okay wearing just a long sleeved shrit under it. Right now I am wearing tan cotton pants that have a flannel lining. I wear a leather base ball type pilots cap. I also have a pair or two of those bib overall type lined carharts that I wear plowing in heavy snow etc, but they are a job to get into. Worse yet you have to have pretty good timing when you need to run to the outhouse.

Wait, WHAT!?! don't tell me there are people that actually go outside in weather like that. I know y'all are used to it and pro'lly prefer it to all the heat, humidity and skeeters we have down here but I gotta te'yas that something RILLY BAD would have to be about to happen to me is I stayed in the house to make me go outside in THIS stuff.

I don't like to go north or Conroe Texas after December 15th. ;)

And then Mrs. Kozmic catches him in the basement dressed like that and all hell breaks loose.
"Dammit, we've got company! Put your pants on and get upstairs! ....are you drunk?!"

:D :D :D :D

Sooo close Hillbilly!
Actually, it's usually Lady Koz sayin'...."I finally got rid of the company. Take your pants off and get upstairs....We can get drunk and all kindza funky. And don't forget those sexy goggles"!;)

Now we're talking a different kind of heat. That beats going outside anyways.
But per your post, you weren't wearing any pants to begin with.
