I am still waiting for my 15-22 sport back from the proof house as i had the barrel shortened,this will be the second barrel to be shortened down to 12"...my first barrel came back at 13 5/8th"
i dont think the guy doing it had a rule haha.

So i have collected a few bits ready to hang on to the 15-22

I have been asking the same thing...from what i have discovered, any rifle to be sold in the UK, has to have the barrel proofed. Which means it gets tested for its tolerances at a proof house, who fire rounds with a bigger bang than what is intended for the rifle, to see that the barrel is up to spec. This applies to new rifles, which upon passing proof will have a proof house stamp placed on the barrel.

I am planning to get my barrel shortened very soon and have been told that seeing as though my rifle barrel has already been proofed and that the work the barrel shortening i am having done is being done on a proofed barrel, that i will not need to have my barrel reproofed. However, should i decide to sell it on, I would be responsible for getting the barrel proofed again. A slight loophole in the regulations.

Thanks for posting the proof article Ben. It is interesting reading. So you have the barrel work done, send them the complete firearm and they do their thing and reproof it.. I see the logic for caliber changes or custom built guns, but in your case I don't see the necessity.
The section about ammo is interesting. I am a Cowboy Action Shooter. There are many individuals who sell custom loaded ammo in our sport. By British Law they would be illegal!
I have sold some myself, but only when somebody showed up at a match and had forgotten to bring their own!

Yeah, when i spoke to the guy who is to do my barrel shortening, he said the loophole in the regulations means that i do not have to have my barrel (after it has been shortened) reproofed. Seeing as it is not being sold. Technically i can do whatever i want to my barrel. As long as the rifle is over 24 inches long. However the loophole closes if i should ever (which i doubt) sell my rifle to someone else. Then because the barrel has had work done on it, it would be my responsibility to send it to the proof house, to get it reproofed before selling it on. Laws are funny things.

Who you getting the barrel work done with? I been trying to find someone reliable to do it since the other option is now no longer available (SUffolk Rifle)

Yes you guessed right my 15-22 is in the long brown paper wrap,

here in jolly blighty we get other things in plain brown paper

wrapped boxes but usually not firearms i will post a few pics
