Storing ammo for 20 years

Cool, dark, and dry are the optimal conditions for ammo storage. I've known many competition shooters who stored their ammo in old refrigerators and never reported any problems. Around 1977 while at Ft. Leonard Wood, we found an old 1911 that had been left in a desk drawer in an old building. The ammo in the magazines had a 1943 dated headstamp, and every round fired without any problems.

Regards,

Dave

When my present fridge dies it will be for gun powder storage.

Storing ammo for 20 years

Hey James if you're still out there reading this thread just keep in in any sealed container with some moisture absorbent and out and away from direct light/heat source. 20 years is nothing for today's factory ammo. Hand-loads may be another story.

Now when we talk about factory ammo we mean from good American company's they generally consistent in their production and QC control.

There are a literally hundreds of stories out there over the years of how the adult kids when cleaning out their parents home after they died finding loaded 1911 mags in the attic and not only was the ammo good the mags still function good. And back then they had nowhere near the manufacturing capabilities we have today with tolerances and tight seals etc.

You biggest concern should be where are you going to stash all that ammo at and if you can get to it. If you stash outside your home you have to remember to map it so you remember where it's at in case the landscaping changes over the years and if they build a building or something over your stash you are screwed.

And if Clinton gets in there we may all be screwed cause one of the ways they will get the guns is to cut off the ammo production for civilian use. Will all have glorified paper weights and hand loading will only be good until your supplies run out then they will also shut down all the shooting ranges.

Stock up and keep it dry before November 5th because the fix is in. Good luck to ya.

Yeah, Mulebuk Sam, I'm still here. My thanks to you and to the others who posted a reply after my initial thanks to everyone who had taken time to answer my query.

Cheers to all,
Jim
