Strange Dog Names

It may not quite qualify as "strange", but my last dog, a Shepherd mix, was named Bishop. I named him after a Monty Python skit, a sort of take-off of the show, "The Saint", or at least that type of crime-action drama. I loved a line from that skit where someone would spot the title character, and exclaim, "It's da Bishop!". So, that was his actual name...Da Bishop.

While not a dog, as a child my Father had a pet fighting rooster. He named the rooster...Esmeralda Peabody T.W.A. Jones.

He also had a cat named General Sterling Pryce in True Grit, the original version.

I grew up with a lot of pets so I won't name them all, just some of the more unusual names. Growing up we had a female cat named Helman. I think named after my Dad's partner when he was a PO. Then we had a Dalmatian named Bertha Butt. My sister named the dog. I think there was a crazy song from the 70's about a cave man whose woman was named Bertha Butt. When the dog would wag her tail her whole rear end would sway. We had a polydactyl cat I named Wolfgang. We called him Wolfy for short. My aunt called him Sasquatch. My dad called him PITA. He was quite the ratter but liked to bring them to us alive.

Some of you know we care for two colonies of feral cats. They have all been fixed but sometimes new ones come along. They only get named once they get fixed. Some of the more fun names are Stubbs McCoy (she has a stubby tail), Bram, Kina, Finn.

Around Halloween I was naming 3 kittens and mama. I was struggling so a friend suggested a Halloween theme. We came up with Riply for the mom (Aleins) and Dexter, Boris (Karloff), and Edgar Allan Poe for the kittens. The kittens were too feral to tame except for one, which I am only half heartedly trying to find a home for. :o

Here is Edgar. There is a resemblance, no?

I named my first dog Lassie.In my defense,I was only 5 [emoji14]
Several years later I named the cat Lucretia [emoji16]

Yeah we had a collie named Lassie when I was little too. And a horse named Blackie, another dog named Happy, the list goes on.

My brother had a duck he named Wayne, who after a while went to visit my dad's cousin when we went on holidays. Wayne was gone when we got back......cousin said Wayne went on a holiday too.

Had a dog wander up at my house named "Bill Edwards"
I was living in LA at the time....Lower Alabama.....nuff said.

My avatar is a rescue and was named Jellybean when we got her. She is now known as Beans and is a wonderful companion!

We recently rescued two kittens and named them "Pork&Beans".

Years ago we acquired,in of all things a guitar trade, a pedigreed English Springer Spaniel named "Champion Blueberry Muffin". We called her Muff. (Imagine going outside and yelling..oh, Blueberry!! Yeah, me too) The dog had the brain power of dryer lint and would bark incessantly at lights, shadows and sound waves. We had her for 12 years before cancer took her.

We also had a kitten who's super power was ferreting out my "medicinal herbs" no matter where they were secreted. I called him "Stash".

If we're including cats we used to have two brothers named Ernest and Julio....after the Gallo brothers.

We also had a huge orange tabby named Fearless because he would harass the neighborhood dogs. Our neighbor kept a Doberman with a nasty attitude. Sometimes he would chain him up in the backyard. The cat new exactly how long that chain was. He'd just walk across the yard about a foot out of range. The dog would charge and run out of rope. When he was about to pass out from choking himself the cat would sit up on his haunches and shadowbox with him, drove the dog insane with rage. When the same dog was in the house he liked to get on the roof and hang over the edge where the dog could see him out the sliding glass door. Dog would ram the glass door until he passed out.

One day we were sitting on the porch when we heard a bunch of barking from the other neighbor's house. He had a Lab. Fearless comes tearing around the corner with the dog in chase and disappears around the next corner. A few seconds later here they come again and disappear. We hear a strange sound and next we see the dog first, going the opposite direction from the first two laps and sure enough...Fearless was right on his tail giving chase. Only time I've ever seen a big dog chased by a cat.

Dogs ~ Ya Gadda Love 'um ...

When I rescued this dog from destruction his name was "Dillinger" :

I quickly gave him the call name of "Buckethead" as you could "swish" a donut down his gullet without touching the "rim". He was sentenced to the pound for getting in a fight with a German Shepard and putting 70 stitches in the poor dog's face. It was a "dog thing" that had to do with the Shepard feeling he was protecting "his" children.

Otherwise, the dog was like Ferdinand the Bull in that he was completely mellow, not aggressive at all is size may not be apparent from the photo but he weighed in at 130 lbs and was quite wide.

And then there were my wife's dogs ...

One of my wife's favorites was ToTo:

Named after the wind blown Terrier from The Wizard of Oz

My wife's current dog "Sparky" is the opposite of Buckethead, very aggressive and especially protective of my wife:

The sweet nut in my avatar was PJ (Precious Jewel) and he/she was a hermaphrodite and her sister was Scooter (all she did when we first rescued her was scoot around on her rear). Both were Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. Lost both to cancer within a year of each other and we still miss them every day.

Our latest baby is PC (Precious Charmer), a Lhasa. She turned 5 yesterday. My wife's birthday was yesterday, also, but she is just a bit older than PC.

Our cat, a rescue from our neighbors who abandoned the little thing when they were foreclosed, is Bis'kit. I don't know why, but one of the kids at the house said, before they all left the area, that Bis'kit was his name.

Now folks wonder if I heard right since I was (am) known for not hearing very well.
