Surpressors

its actualy a $200 tax stamp.. you must go threw a class 2 or 3 dealer.. and you will need your local sheriff to sign off on it.. turn around right now is around 4 months which is way quicker that it was this time last year... your local class 2 or 3 dealer should be able to walk you right threw the process.. its not bad at all

I had SSK make one a few years ago the approval came in before they finished. At the time it was to be signed by the highest law official serving your area in my case the Chief of Police signed. The signature I have heard can be an issue in some places make sure you can obtain it before spending your money.

The tax has to be paid on a silencer or muffler. This is what it's called in Federal Law and BATF regulations.

Suppressor needs nothing in most places. Also called, redundantly, a flash suppressor.

M16A1 suppressor on my M&P 15-22. Ain't a silencer, of course. No taxes involved. :)

I think it's absolutely ludicrous that something that could safe your hearing is an NFA item... But we all know there is no winning those battles.

What is the price range for a silencer? I wouldn't be looking for the most expensive one but if i wanted one what would i be looking at spending? $200 for the stamp + what for the can? Also, do you need a stamp per silencer?

Yes. Every silencer is a separate item and you need the $200 tax stamp for each one. And if you sell it the new owner pays a $200 tax as well. Nice racket!

Putting a silencer on a registered machinegun or SBR requires a tax on the silencer too.

And silencers themselves are horrendously overpriced just because "they can be" a Gemtech Halo 5.56 is approx $900 plus the tax stamp that takes it up to $1100 for a muffler....

Just saw an American Gaurdian episode on the surefire line of suppressors. Pretty neat, you can slide them over muzzle break and hold < a minute angle group @ 100 yds. Probably could get a new car though for the same price.

I've thought about making my 15-22 a "two" stamp gun, one to make it a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) and a second for a silencer. While a SBR is a matter of taste, you either like ot or you don't, a silencers requires more research. For example, many silencers seem to cause a point of impact change to zero, that could be an issue. 22 ammo is very dirty so firing it may eventually clog the baffles and cause a baffle strike by a bullet (not a good thing), so a silencer that comes apart for cleaning may be preferable. If you get a .223 can, you can also use it on a 22lr, thus saving you money if you also have a.223. Size, weight, all come into play. Here are a few sights where you can learn more, they are by no means the only sights:

I'd be interested if any of our British friends hang out in this forum and could comment as I believe silencers are encouraged in England as a means to be "neighborly" when hunting. I've read they are also pretty inexpensive, $90.

Before I'd turn the M&P 15-22 into a SBR I'd just do the same with a standard AR15 and then use a dedicated .22LR "upper" on it. That way I could just put a short 5.56mm upper on it anytime I wanted. The uppers ain't taxed, just the lowers. You can buy shore barrelled uppers over the counter without paperwork of any sort.

Likewise a silencer can be screwed into several different rifles. I'd want one rated for 5.56mm, not .22LR.

Exactly why I'm still thinking about the best way to proceed. ;)
