Swap barrels on a 627 V-8 comp to a half lug??

Seems the 627s with the V-8 comp barrel are not quite as desirable as the other models (and thus cheaper and easier to find).

I found a pre-lock V-8 comp 627-3 (8-shot).

Could this revolver be sent to S&W to have the 5" comp barrel swapped for a 5" half-lug PC barrel?

What would be the disadvantages of doing this?

I think that the disadvantage would mainly be the decrease in the value of your gun. That gun may be easier to find than some but is still not "easy" to find. I would probably sell it if it is not just what you want and keep looking with a stash of cash, or who knows, offer it up for trade. Custom guns are fine if you absolutely know you will always keep it, but if you are not 100% certain of this, I would not alter it. You would never get your money back.

Price what it would cost to re barrel. That might change your mind.

Actually the pre-lock V-comps are rather rare, I wouldn't alter it. Just keep looking for what you want.
