I have a new S&W 627, 8 shot 357 revolver. When I opened the side cover I found what lookes like very cheap parts inside. Nothing like the S&W I am used to. I replaced the trigger with an older one I had but can't seem to tell what to replace the hammer with. It is framed mounted firing pis of course. I look at the normal parts suppliers but cant tell what I need to order. Instead of listing a part for this gun they list parts by j,k,l,n frame and a measufrement of some kind like .550. I WANT TO REPLACE THE HAMMER WITH AN OLDER ONE that looks like a quality hammer. Nearing a thousand dollars for a revolver I expect a top quality pistol with top quality parts. This is my last new model S&W. From now on its an older model or none at all.

Probably the measurements involve the width of the trigger face or hammer spur. Unfortunately, with the frame-mounted firing pin I don't think a hammer swap to the older style would be simple.

As an aside, does the gun work well? The MIM internals look different but by nearly all accounts work perfectly fine; perhaps shoot it a while then decide. Hope this is helpful.

Hello
The parts that you are looking at in the gun are MIM parts. The older parts are not. They look much cheaper, but they are just as good. Most manufacturers use them.
Your gun is of course an N frame. The measurement you mention is the width of the hammer. I do not think that the older hammer will work on this revolver.
Hope this helps.

I see that someone responded while I was typing this

When S&W changed to the internal firing pin, they also changed to the MIM hammer, trigger and other parts.
MIM hammers are not comparable with the older model guns and cannot be used.

Triggers "may be".

I believe it was a S&W engineer who posted a long description, perhaps on this forum, of what the company went through to develop the MIM parts production process that they now use. They were not satisfied until their professional shooters couldn't tell the difference between guns made with MIM and forged parts. And their accountants, who have to accrue reserves on their financial statements for anticipated warranty repairs, wouldn't have been satisfied until the reliability was such that the lifetime warranty wouldn't kill the company down the road.

I for one have gotten comfortable with the idea that if Jerry Miculek can't tell the difference between the old and the new parts then the new ones are OK for me.

The best procedure that I can think of to get what you want is to send your revolver to the Performance Center for an action job and ask them to install the PC hammer and trigger, which as I understand it, are still forged. A telephone call to the Performance Center, not normal customer service, would get you a quick answer.
