I love historical tidbits on guns I own. I decided to letter 2 S&Ws I own that have repair dates. A 57 pinto that lettered as blue and a 4" Heavy frame target 22. The 57 came back lettered as shipped to Rex firearms NY NY 5-15-1964 4" blue. The only interesting thing was a notation for Albert Thomas. I did find an old post that indicated Rex FA was known for engraved and two tone guns. But no info on the 9-1964 repair date. The HFT lettered as a 6" shipped to Bailey-Spencer Hardware in Lynchburg VA on 11-4-1926.
I joined the SWCA early this year and decided to check to see if by chance the repair dates coincided with the post shipping alterations. Not much on the 57 other than shipping order and SN list. The prices are entertaining. $86.06 for a 57 in presentation case. The HFT was a little better. Letter from owner dated 7-26-1946 requesting a 4" kit gun barrel and repair and refinish. Plus the SW response letter quoting price of $7.40 for barrel and $5.62 to reblue. And a note that if nickel it would be another $2.25 to strip prior to reblue.
I hope you find this as interesting as I do.
