I'm in a quandary. I sold my Mosquito several years ago & have not had a .22 pistol since. I know most of the specs on the 422/622 etc. I really love the 2nd & 3rd gen Smith & currently own/carry a 3914. We also have a PPQ M1 9mm that we love.

So my question is, search for the 422 or just buy a PPQ 22 with warranty etc knowing that I'll eventually look for & buy a 422? Any replacement parts I would or should get immediately upon purchasing a 422? Also, please don't give me the 'just buy both'

I'm sure many of you are like me in that there is just not enough money to buy all the guns, ammo, reloading supplies, holsters..

Okay---out of

I had no idea what a 422 was, so I asked Google----it was a very short conversation.

It seems it's a fixed sight handgun.

There are most assuredly valid needs for a fixed sight handgun----I guess I just never thought a .22 plinker was one of them.

I plink with a target pistol. If/when I want to do something a bit more productive/constructive, I can use the same gun.

Sound like a plan?

My 422 is the softest shooting 22 owned. Perhaps not the most accurate in a double handful of plinkers and target 22's.

Definitely high on the fun factor scale; one never to part with.:)

Not to talk you in either direction, but if you are also a fan of 3rd gen guns why not include the 2204 and 2206 in you quest?

On the good side (except for the small version) all of these take the same magazines as the Model 41, so extra mags are available from the factory

There were fixed and adjustable sight 422s; the latter has a standard revolver-style Target sight. They are nice and due to the low bore axis easily adaptable to a suppressor if you are so inclined.

They are fairly plentiful and reasonably priced, for now. Good luck in your search and buying decision.

Rare catch! :D The "2204" would be a carbon steel frame and blued/black upper version of the matte stainless Model 2206 but alas... this model does not exist.

I have a 2206 that’s a very nice pistol. Stainless with adjustable sights and very easy to shoot. I bought it new not long after they came out for my 10 year old to shoot. He’s now 37 and spent the last twenty or so years hiding in the back of my safe. Actually I’m now thinking of putting it on the forum for sale actually.

I like my 422 because I made a replacement muzzle nut which is now an adapter which permits the attachment of a .22 suppressor. Very quite gun used for the removal of small four-footed vermin around the place.

The 422 is a nice plinker or entry level target pistol. My 422 has an adjustable rear sight with fixed ramped front sight. I would prefer a gold bead or fiber optic dot front sight but otherwise it is a fun, accurate .22 that can be found at a good price if patient. The all stainless 2206 is a better choice if bullseye shooting is your goal. Dont know about the PPQ but if it is the same operation as your other PPQ and you like it, then I would probably opt for another PPQ. From what I have read on the Internet, the PPQ is a great gun.

I watched a pristine as-NIB 422 sell for around $750 last month. So, the days of finding one with a reasonable price may be coming to an end. I paid too much for my 2214 - $350 with one mag - but it was in near-new condition albeit with one ding in the aluminum. I still haven't forgiven S&W for discontinuing them...

For years I ignored the 422/622 series at my LGSs--I thought they were too light and kinda odd looking.
Then about a year ago I found a well used 4" adjustable sight 2206 and bought it for $100. I soon found out it had a great trigger, it could hold its own against my Woodsmans and High Standards and several of my friends immediately tried to buy it from me.
Needless to say, I don't plan on selling it anytime soon and if I see another reasonably priced 422/622/2206 it's coming home with me.
I like the weight, balance, accuracy and reliability of the heavier 2206. The only thing I really don't care for is the magazine release but I can live with it.
Sooooo...buy one if you can find one you like, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I've got two 422 one with adjustable sight one with fixed plus I also have a 2206. So you can tell I like them. I've shot 41's and in my hands just as accurate but I'm not a target shooter just a plinker.

I have a 422 and it is a good plinking gun. It has a 12 rd. mag but there are also 10 rd. mags. and they are interchangable with the mod. 41.

After reading so much praise, I guess I'll be on the hunt for one. Thanks for the useful info!

I've had a few 422s & a 622. Both very nice 22s. They are flat and light weight. Function well and shoot accurately. Much better gun than newer generation models. Plenty of them to be had $300-$400 range.

The black finish on the 422 and 2214 models is not very robust. The sharp edges wear quickly if the gun is holstered a lot. If you plan on carrying it, a 622 or 2206 would be a better choice. I have owned nine pistols in this series; still have a 2206, two 622’s, and a limited edition brushed nickel 2214.
