Started shooting PPC with my regular old 686. Others use fancy custom revolvers with tri-adjust sights that allow them to aim at the neck and have the bullet hit the X.

I don't have $700 for a Clark Custom upgrade. Instead, can I install a taller front sight so that the revolver shoots POI at 7 yards, an inch or two low at 25 yards, and a foot low at 50 yards? Will this idea work?

Replace .243" front sight with .278".

well, .375" is the tallest allowed by the rules unfortunately those are few and far between. I would get the tallest you can currently get, which may be a .330" blade...I'd have to double check Brownell's. Then all you need to do is find your dope for the 7 (which will work just fine for the 15 and 25 with a center hold). I set mine up to hit high in the x-ring at 7 and be centered at 25. The .330 isn't tall enough for me to get a neck hold at 25 :(, but I get neck hold at 50. Without checking my book I think my 50 yard dope is down two full turns from my 7 yard dope.

I was thinking the tallest factory blade was a .300. On my old 586, I could shoot the neck hold at 50 and 25 yds. The 25 yd neck hold was with the rear sight all the way down. Center was 11 half turns. The 50 yd neck hold was like 8 half turns IIRC.

Palmetto,

I did look on Brownell's and Midway and all I can currently find are the .300" sights. Now I am unsure where I scrounged the .330" I installed on my 2.5" 686.

I also use either a .160" or a .196" (Model 41 rear slide) rear sight blade to get the maximum amount of adjustment. The .160" blades are nice but I prefer the .196" blades when I can get them. It may be the way I look through the sights but bottomed out gets me a 12 o'clock 8 ring hold at the 25. Sighting on that 12 o'clock 8 does give you tight groups but as I age my shooting prescription does not let me see those little numbers any more (but I can still see the rings), so back to center hold at the 25 for me.

I also count my adjustments in 1/2 turns, but convert it to full turns when explaining to others. I checked my notes and my 7 yard dope is seven 1/2 turns up from bottom and my 50 yard dope is five 1/2 turns down from center.

they used to gauge your front sight and I think 360 was as tall as allowed, for dist revolver, whatever the max height smith&wesson has made, but if you use the gun in open only them you can do what you want. Check Numbrich also.Good luck also Jarvis made a slide on barrel weight, then 2 set screws for L frames that you could add for open and easily remove for dist they were pretty cool if you can find on, Good luck Bob

You are correct Bob. I spoke to a referee and he said the gauges they use are .360", which was the tallest revolver sight S&W admitted to ever having. Fairly easy to make a patridge front sight. You need a piece of 1/8" flat steel, a hacksaw, a file, a sight to use as a pattern and a little patience.

Call Dawson Precision in Texas. He will make a sight to your specs.
