I have a neighbor who just showed me an ad for a Talo version of the Model 686. It has, I think, all the bells and whistles plus the factory plastic case and paperwork. The sights have been changed to night sights but the originals are included. He wants to shoot it and keep it as a house gun for self-defense. It has already been fired. He wanted to know what I thought about the price ($900) and whether it was better kept unfired as a collector's item. This is a California gun. I am no expert on the value of guns, particularly short-run distributor guns. The pictures show the lock. Could members who keep a tight watch on which guns are likely to have collector value and those that can be handled and shot frequently please give me some insight on what to tell this guy. He is not a gun enthusiast, but like many wants to have a sidearm for protection against home invasion. Thank you very much to all who comment.

I have the same gun 6 inch. Very nice.

But for home protection? For the same money, he can get a G17 and a bunch of 10 round magazines.

Home protection revolvers are six shots and you're out.

Talos are, in general, normal actions/frames with different grips and sights. They are not a special collectors item or meant to be. I have several Talos and the prices do not shoot north in the market due to this distributor.
Even if I do get a Talo, I still change out the grip and/or sights to something more personal or functional

No particular collector value above that of a standard 686. I have one just like it and shoot it often.

A revolver was the first "point & click" device! That's no safety to check, no checking to see if the mag is in all the way, no checking to see if a round is in the chamber, and in a "home protection" situation if you need more than 6 your dead!

Most, if not all, of the Talo 686s' were 686+s' 7 shot variety. The unfluted cylinder variety came in 3", 5", & 7". The regular fluted cylinder variety came in 3" & 6". The 3" varieties seem to be commanding higher prices, but not collector higher prices. The 7"s' seem to have the least desireability.

I have a 3" Talo that stays in my bedside table.... it goes to the range almost every trip. I love it !! The Hogue rubber grips make 357 rounds more fun!! Shoot it often that's what it was built for.
