RATS!!!!! Just read the article in the Az newspaper about the Tamale store up there on North Cave Creek rd...Had pictures too to really make my mouth water...

And here I am just finishing up on a plate of sauerkraut and Polish sausage.

I sure do miss some good real deal Tamales..Can't get them any more, especially around here..You'd think with all the corn fields around here, they'd at least keep the husks and make some for us homesick folks.


Why am I thinks of food now???? Some good ole grits for breakfast sounds good too..Haven't had any of those for a while either....Nope...no Waffle houses around here either. (thank goodness)

Back in the day, a nice lay came by the business in So. Cal. every morning with a gallon bucket of them.

$1 a-pop, and worth every penny!

(Nothing in else in So. Cal. I recall fondly...)
 
WuzzFuzz, I'm guessing there are no Hispanic communities in your area...

I hate the holidays, but I love all the smells of holiday cooking - Biscochitos Posole, baked bread, emanadas.....As the Xmas gets closer, the smells get better!
 
Then there’s the Ur-Ban Legend that Bourbon Street street vender Tamales were made with cat meat.
After a Hurricane or three, not sure if it mattered!
 
Despite being painfully Caucasian genetically, I was born in El Paso in the Army hospital and grew up in the DFW area of Texas. Consequently, I eat Tamales frequently and particularly on Christmas Eve prior to our church's candlelight service. I could probably light the Advent candles with my breath.

I also take consistent ribbing from one of my best friends for being a menudo fan, as well as lengua. Hey, "parts is parts" I think someone once said.

The last time I had a really great tamale was last Christmas when I followed a lady through our local HEB (TX chain of grocery stores) who had a basket laden with pork butts, dried corn husks, red peppers, and masa. When she looked at me in a relatively un-suspicious, quasi-friendly way, I asked, "excuse me, but will your family eat all those tamales your going to make or will you have some for sale?" We struck a deal and exchanged information, rather like a clandestine drug deal.

It isn't Christmas around here till the tamales are shucked!
 
Making tamales may involve a good bit of labor, buy they are not difficult to prepare and the ingredients are few. Anyone with basic kitchen skills can do a batch of tamales. I usually make up about six to twelve dozen at a time, a couple of times a year. They freeze well and will do for a quick meal as they only need to be steamed for a few minutes until heated through.
 
Agreed about making them....it's about time to too as yes they freeze well and my last batch is about gone....

Time to get the steamer out!

Good Tamales are sure enough one of the MANY things I miss about Texas. :)

Someone lead you to believe they have food in Waffle Houses? A nasty rumor. Can't possibly be true. :eek:

I have patronized said establishment. They are indeed delicious, however, a bit pricey. As someone's pointed out, I can frequent several WalMarts in my surrounding area on a Friday or Saturday night, excellent homemade tamales can be scored for usually a buck a piece, or so.

That said, the Tamale Store has a boatload of variety. You ought to be able to buy them frozen and have them shipped to you. Check with the shop...

Even here in eastern Washington we have tamale shops that are decent. I make my own and a faux chili like from Tommy's in L.A.

Hmmmm...It always did make me wonder why there weren't any cats hanging around a Taco stand.:eek:...Same for those on down in Mexico, never did see any hanging around those stands late at night either.:confused:.:o

In Hispanic communities, making tamales at Christmas is a long tradition. Many times, all the women in a family will get together to make them, assembly-line style. BTW, "Tamales" is a plural noun. A single Tamale is a Tamal. But in common use, it has become Tamale and Tamales. Nothing better than a plate of Tamales with chili and queso on top. Don't forget to remove the corn husk, as Jerry Ford did.

They are not that difficult to make, and I have not noticed much difference in their taste from different sources. I even like canned Tamales, used to eat them a lot, but they are not much like the hand-made ones. Some makers wrap them in aluminum foil squares instead of corn husks. I don't think it makes much difference.

Victor, When I first moved to Phoenix, I lived right near by that place..Except it wasn't there then....Bell Road was the North edge of the city..All to the North of Bell road was still desert. Now...People. People, People everywhere.

Thunderbird and Cave Creek Road there was a Drive In Movie theater. Used to drive up or down Bell Road when the vendors used to sell grapefruit and oranges at the road side stands...Used to be a airport were Paradise horse track was there at 7th and Bell.

Tacos....back then, there weren't many Mexican places up in that area.

When my son was deployed.We flew his wife from El Paso to middle Tn for Christmas.First time my wife met her in person.Do not know who was more nervous my wife or daughter in law.My daughter in laws mother and grandmother sent all the ingredients to make tamales.My wife and daughter in law spent Christmas Eve day making tamales that we took to my wife’s mothers house for our annual family Christmas party and dinner.They were a big hit and a great introduction of her to family.

There used to be a Mexican food café down on west 10th street here in Amarillo called Mike's Spanish Kitchen. It was a small place but man they put out some good food and great tamales and it was always a running joke that if you saw all the dead cat bodies back in the alley you might not want to eat there. Ha, Ha, never stopped me. Mike's has been gone for many years now.
