Tamales

About ten years ago, a bunch of guys rode our motorcycles into a town, I think it was called Chinipas. We all pulled up in front of a little restaurant, and the proprietress was looking to serve lunch to about a dozen hungry guys.

Then a little kid came up the street with a bucket of tamales. I tried a couple, and then ordered a couple more. Pretty soon, everybody wasbuying tamales. We bought up the whole bucketful. Nobody needed lunch from the restaurant, so we moved on.

One of the employees at a Mexican restaurant that we frequent makes tamales at home, and we often buy them direct from her at her home. These are red beef tamales in the husk. We freeze them, and then take them out when we hunger for those delicacies. Mmmm good!

REAL Tamales found in Far West KY

There is a small bodega in Mayfield KY that makes and sells tamales on Friday and Saturday. Eat In or Carry Out
They also make GREAT burritos - almost the size of a 6 inch Subway sandwich.

I thought motorcycle gangs ride into towns to spread civil discord and anarchy. But maybe I have seen The Wild One too many times. Or maybe motorcycle gangs today focus on raiding the local tamales.

Victor, When I first moved to Phoenix, I lived right near by that place..Except it wasn't there then....Bell Road was the North edge of the city..All to the North of Bell road was still desert. Now...People. People, People everywhere.

In my day, Camelback was the north edge of Phoenix! And Sky Harbor was out in the sticks.

Flew in a half a dozen years ago and I was flabbergasted . . . I thought Phoenix was big with a population of 300,000.

By the way - the fellow that spoke of the tamale shops in Eastern WA - please tell us the details -

I've been known to drive 50 miles for good Tamales. Well now a gal at my son's work makes. The best I've had in 10 years now I get 5 -10 dozen once a month and her home made salsa is to die for.

A couple years ago we had a couple with usually a couple of their kids in tow that would come down our block about once a week selling tamales out of a cooler. They were the "real deal" and absolutely delicious. I would usually buy as many as I had cash on hand for.
I got to where I was keeping an eye out for them and then they quit coming around. Never found out why they quit showing up but I sure do miss those authentic, homemade tamales. They were to die for.

Love a cheese and pepper tamale with a sunny side up egg on it. Used to work with 2 Hispanic brothers whose family would have a tamale making party mid December. We used to laugh because for 3 years straight the gringo's would get their masa to float first.
