Thinking of getting one of these, and would like the opinions of owners, and comparisons with other da/sa pistols. Such as sig 220, beretta, hk, cz.
Thanks,
Bob

Compare how? Mine (a 4506-1) was heavy and a bit on the long side for appendix IWB carry. It was pleasant to shoot and decently accurate. it was utterly reliable. It was not as accurate as the P220s that I've shot, it was not as accurate as my friend's HK Tactical, it was as accurate or more accurate than the CZ and EAA .45s I've shot, it was somewhat less accurate than some of the 1911s I've shot and somewhat more accurate than others, it was less accurate than the Ruger P90 that I now have, it was more accurate than the Glock .45s that I've shot, it was less accurate than one Springfield XD .45 and more accurate than another. It was heavier than almost any of these guns. The trigger was, in my opinion, crisper than those on some of those guns and not nearly as crisp as those on others.

I have had mine for 20 years, a 4506 no-dash.

It is a very soft shooter and accurate, 2" groups at 25 yards. The trigger is nice both single action and double action.

When it was new the slide stop would rise mid magazine and lock the slide back. The shop corrected that.

Now the gun has developed a failure to extract about every 50 shots. I am looking at replacing the extractor. The gun has seen only a thousand shots or so and I wonder what could have happened to the extractor.

These minor glitches can be considered normal for a gun and I still love it.

A boring photo but I do not haveanything better handy.

I just picked up my 4506 yesterday, took it apart and cleaned it up. Haven't been to the range yet, I hope it shots as good as it looks. I also picked up 2 used mags for it $15.00 each at local LEO Supply.

sasu, I also have a 4506 no dash. It developed failure to extract a year or so ago. Here's what I did:
1.) removed extractor; cleaned behind its slot in the slide.
2.) installed a new extractor spring.
3.) polished the chamber with 1500 grit paper.

Steps 1 and 2 above did no good. Step 3 above, I believe, has about cured the problem; although I need to shoot it some more to be sure.

Make sure the ext. tip is not chipped. Also be sure the ejector is intact. One well informed forum member here says the extractor and ejector work very closely together on this gun and must be in good working order so as not to cause FTE's.

Boomerbob, the single action pull is crisp but heavy on my 4506 and always has been; double action pull is very nice. The slide-to-frame fit is pretty sloppy too; but does not seem to affect accuracy.

I bought mine brand new in 1991. I don't like it quite as much as my Colt 1911's. I have not owned other .45's so I can't comment on them.

I have a 4506 no dash also. It was made in 1989. I am not the orig owner, but have owned it for quite some time. I love it and it has been 100% reliable. Some like the Sig 220 better, and they are fine pistols, but I prefer the 4506. A true classic that will be reliable, last forever.

I picked up a Fresno Co. Sheriffs dept 4506 a couple of weeks ago- a little holster wear, but like new inside. Shoots just fine. on a side note, does anyone make some relativly thin wood grips for these? I have seen the Hogues and they are a bit thick for me.

Are hi cap mags available for the 4506? Have any of you owners replaced the front sight with a flourescent or tritium sight?

Hey, Dennis40x, now that you have your gun on paper, how about working on your accuracy? HA!

Nice shooting. I cant get groups like that with my shotgun!

I just recently got 4506, probably will shoot it tommorrow at a new indoor range in my city. I like the feel and I have two Glock 45's. Nothing like a 45 for leveling the field. I look forward to the single action part of shooting for target purposes, something a Glock is not the best. Good piece of steel in these fine pistols.

I've owned both a Sig 220 and an S&W 4506-3. The Sig was sold after I started shooting the 4506 alot. I love mine and carry it on-duty now that I work P/T for a police dept. where the chief has let me carry it. Very well built gun that has been 100% reliable since day one. Bought it new from Lew Horton's a few years back. It was a unit from a cancelled law enforcement agency order. Their loss was definately my gain. Buy one and enjoy it.
