Telluride has become so liberal I doubt there would be a gun shop there. I'd try Montrose, Cortez or Durango. There is some great Jeepin' in the area, though! I'm not sure if they rent in Telluride, though. They don't like Jeepers, either, but they do in Ouray. A great trip is the Imogene Pass -- Black Bear Pass loop! Or if someone scares you away from Black Bear, try Ophir Pass to complete the loop. That's some great mountain fourwheeling!

I don't have any pics available, but here's a couple I googled:

I haven't been to Telluride in too long......... such a great town.

You have no idea how much I want to return for a visit now that you mentioned it.

The best thing about Telluride (and Aspen) is the way into it. This early in the summer, you probably can't get down Blackbear road, its probably still in snow drifts up on top. Its one way downhill, so you've got to start on the Ouray side, then return over Imogene. Its also probably drifted 20' deep, but they seem to plow it out first.

A few years ago, we were coming back into Ouray from the Camp Bird mine road and ran into a traffic jam. There was a yellow TJ on its side up against the cliff. It seems a rock came loose up on the top and fell 1600 feet, hitting the poor driver on the head and shoulder. Yes, he died instantly. His passenger had the presence of mind to grap the steering wheel and turn into the cliff face. Had it gone the other way, off the edge, it had another 1000 or so feet to the bottom. Out there, you can find danger everywhere.

There's a nice little public park on the east end of town. Good for a picnic. I say that because there are no places to eat with reasonable prices.

I haven't been to Telluride since the hippies took over so I can't comment on the gun shops. I doubt there is one.

Montrose is out of gunshops now, although one of the Western Clothing stores has some new guns and a few reloading supplies, Gunnison is gunshopless (is that a word) now, Salida has two, not sure about Cortez or Durango. Silverton doesn't have a gun shop anymore either.

Beautiful country around Telluride enjoy the trip.

Gun shop in Telluride? Heh. That's a good one!

There are still a few good shops in Durango, definitely worth a trip:

Gardenswartz on Main (can't miss it, there's a giant Weatherby hanging right off the front of the building.)

Colorado Trading Company back on 8th -- may personal fave.

Goods For The Woods is also worth a visit.

Don't bother expressing your interest in guns in Telluride. Oh, and enjoy the NYC prices.

We drove thru and out of town as fast as we could.

Yep Telluride is the center of the left.

If you happen to be driving down 285 from Denver, there is a nice shop in Bailey.

The best and almost only real gunshop in that area is in Cortez, just to the north of the Taco Bell. Durango had a gunshop, but it closed a few years back. Nothing in Montrose or Gunnison. Gunnison has a western goods store, no guns, but it has one of the largest all-time typical Elk mounts hung on a wall.

Durango does have a couple of good custom gunsmiths, but they don't have a retail location. Junction has two gunshops as I recall, but it's a bit far from Telluride.

You can easily enter Telluride by paved roads all the way without having to take a jeep trail, as it seems someone indicated. Just come down from Ridgeway to the north or up from Cortez to the South. Coming from Cortez you've got to cross Lizard Head pass.

The city park has reasonable camping if you're in an RV or tenting. Eating out prices are kind of high, but you are in one of the premier resort destinations in the Rockies.

Oh, your right, Dick, about Black Bear and Imogene being closed, yet. I wasn't thinking -- but then I'm working nightshift. (And they trust me to run a power plant???). Those passes usually don't open up until the 4th of July or later. They get snowed in early, too. Last time we were there was late Oct. and we had to stay on the passes east of 550, and the top of Engineer Pass was snowed in, too. We made a loop out of Cinnamon Pass and Stoney Pass. Beautiful, but that's more in the Silverton area.

At any rate, the whole San Juan Mountain area is beautiful.
