I'm a soon to be owner of a S&W handgun, just counting the days till the California waiting period is over. The S&W forum is a fantastic resource and I'm making good use of the time.

In gratitude -

I'm a NYC LEO who carries a S&W 5946 all night. I bought my 1st revolver, a 617 4'' last week, nice but damn thing is large and is meaty. Here in NYC there are not too many gun stores that stock handguns in a wide variety. They know what the Dept.s allow and only stocks them. I wish I lived where the deer & the antelope roam.

Welcome from Texas librarysquare. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Hello Library Square,

Welcome to the forum. You will find a wealth of information on this site. I guess today you have eight more days to wait. You must be feeling like a kid at Christmas time. Let us know when you receive your treasure.

I picked up my new M&P full size 9mm (in a nice black box) late yesterday. It seems it was manufactured on September 3, 2010 (SN DUZ1***). There didn't seem to be much preservative on the gun, but, following the instructions in the manual, I cleaned it. The take down, cleaning and reassembly was easy. The only unusual part of the cleaning process was that the patches I ran through the barrel came out with a decidedly blue tint (S&W blue?).

I wanted to try the large grips first so I attempted to remove the frame tool. I could not get it out! Searching the S&W forum I found the "corner of a table" technique" that worked for me also.

I had tried a rental M&P at the target range where I shoot and I was expecting my new M&P to be a bit stiffer than their rental gun, but I had no idea that the magazines were going to be part of the saga. My new M&P magazines are really hard to load. One excuse I'll use is that my hands were already tired from trying to remove the frame tool. (I know - weak hands and a weak excuse).

Finally, today, I was able to get to the range and shoot. Well, I love my M&P and how it shoots right out of the box. I'm going try to improve my accuracy so I can take advantage of the capabilities of the M&P. It shot exactly were I pointed. Now I just have to work on pointing in the right direction.

My notes to myself after my day at the range are: 1) leave my magazines fully loaded (9 is all I could fit into my 10 round magazines) for a few days and then check back to see if I've become stronger or the magazines have become weaker; 2) try the medium grips when I'm next at the range; 3) work with a tennis ball to get my hand strength up; and 4) find some dry fire drills to improve my technique (and have fun with my M&P).
