That look of disgust . . .

I shoot on private property and haven't experienced that. I don't think I would even think twice about a comment about revolvers. I buy what I like and not what others like. I have a 9mm Shield, a model 639, a model 686+ 3" barrel, and a model 13-3 4". The problem I have is deciding which one to take to the range so I usually take all 4. I like shooting them all. The revolvers have slightly better triggers but the semis aren't bad.

A few years back, I went to the infamous Don's Guns in Indy (it was below zero outside) indoor range on the Northside of Indy.

Brought a close buddy of mine, who enjoyed shooting my guns, but didn't have the financial wherewithal to have any.

I was in lane 1 and everyone else was shooting .22 LR or 9MM. Being the scheming devil I am, I started shooting with my K22. After a couple of cylinders, I changed to my 6" M29-2 with 25 grains of W296 under a hardcast 250gr lead bullet.

I said to my buddy Jimmy, "watch the other lanes, this will be hilarious!"

So, I then loaded said .44 Magnum with said .44 Magnum hot loads and shot the fastest 6 rounds I ever shot. The flames were at least 20 feet out of the muzzle and the noise was tremendous and the concussion was unreal in a 25 yd indoor range.

Jimmy said everyone quit shooting after the 2nd round and while the range was full, everyone stepped back and looked to the left to see what
just happened.

Afterwards, everyone wanted to see what I was shooting and wanted to try it. Poor Jimmy never got to shoot, but got a great beer drinking story

That one flyer is a clear "9", did you hiccup or something?
A

I'm pretty sure the "9" was caused by the nut behind the trigger. :o
( No excuse for that at 10 yards :o :( with that gun)
When I do my part,, it has shot groups like that at 20 -25 yards.
Can't speak for all model 60's but that one will keep up with any handgun I have. :D

I once visited an indoor range in Sacramento. The range attendant looked inside my range bag and remarked (approvingly) "Ah, a Smith and Wesson Combat Masterpiece. Don't see many of those any more."
A young guy next to me (who I later found out was a new deputy) , made a sort of snorting noise and rolled his eyes as he produced his new plastic gun for inspection.
Later, when we were checking out, he brought his target to the desk for inspection. He had hit someplace on the paper quite a few times. My target had the middle shot out.
I shouldn't have said anything, but I just couldn't help it.
"Wow, keep it up and someday you might shoot a group."
It got real quiet and I locked my ancient relic in the bag and left.

Sadly, we LE firearms instructors see that very thing too often. You know, the "shotgun" groups.....

I recently used my 686 357mag at a bowling pin match. Most guys shoot 40s&w, 9mm or 38 super. I guess they never heard or seen a 357 magnum in action because they were all amazed how much louder it was over what they were shooting and that my .357 158gr factory JHP's were clearing the pins off the table with one shot.

I went to sight in my new 629 3" several weeks ago and try it with 5 or 6 types of ammo. To the left of me was 2 guys and a girl shooting Glocks and plastic Mouse Guns at 6 yards... I start off shooting smoky .44Special's topped off with lead hard cast stacking rounds @ 10 yards. They are looking at me like why is he shooting that old smoky thing. Then I start rolling in with full house mags; two to the navel, two to the chest, and two to the head all a second apart shots and all 2-3inch pairs at most. Then they start watching, whispering, & smiling, as they "got it" then... I think they wanted to shoot it but left before I thought to offer...

I guess you would call me a revolver guy, or and old guy.
Just counted. I have 57 Revolvers, and 23 semi autos.
Yep, i'm a dinosaur.

That is so bad ***! I just turned 40 and only got into revolvers in the last 2 years. Now, I'm carrying a revolver 80% of the time. Yes, that includes even an "N" frame! I feel like I missed out all those years from 20 to 38 when I started carrying and carried only a Glock 27. What a piece of **** that gun is/was comparatively!;)

So I went to the range Friday and had a great time as usual. (Operative words are: "Great time as usual.")

Guy next to me looks at my two revolvers and screws up his face (that has to hurt on some level) and says,"They make auto pistols now."

I look at this obviously sarcastic, uniformed, and ignorant guy (substitute the word "fool" if you'd like) and I say to him, "I see you've never had the pleasure of owning a revolver. One day, when you get bored of all those autos you might read about and invest in a revolver. You'll get the pleasure of the old times and maybe even a piece of history."

Now, granted, this guy was about 25 years younger than me, and he's still at the stage where he thinks he's cool because he shoots an automatic. Good for him - I hope he's happy.

Has something like this ever happened to you? Did you ever pull on the disdain and disgust of your neighbor in the next position because you were shooting a revolver? I'd really like to know.

Thanks -

Rich
THAT HAS HONESTLY NEVER HAPPENED TO ME. WHEN I SHOOT ON A RANGE, I AM USUALLY ACCOMPANIED BY MY SHOOTING PARTNER, A FELLOW VIETNAM VETERAN. OUR GRIZZLED APPEARANCE, VETERAN'S GARB, AND TARGETS--USUALLY WITH ONE RAGGED HOLE, DISSUADES ANYONE WHO MIGHT WANT TO APPROACH ONE OF US WITH A NEGATIVE COMMENT, ABOUT OUR REVOLVERS......

IF YOU LOOK AT A TARGET, SHOT BY ONE OF THESE YOUNG MORONS, WHO IS USUALLY ARMED WITH A HI-CAP, 9MM, A SHOT GROUP WOULD BE A RANDOM OCCURRENCE.....

HONESTLY, WHENEVER ONE OF US HAS BEEN APPROACHED, IT HAS USUALLY BEEN WITH AN EXPRESSION OF ADMIRATION, OR THANKS FOR OUR SERVICE (50 YEARS TOO LATE IN COMING, BUT APPRECIATED ANYWAY) WE ALWAYS OFFER WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT, IN A FRIENDLY MANNER, TO LESS ACCOMPLISHED SHOOTERS, IF WE ARE APPROACHED.......

BTW--WE BOTH OWN COLT, 1911s IN .45ACP, AS WELL. AT OUR ADVANCED AGE, WE WOULD RATHER SHOOT A WEAPON THAT DROPS EMPTY BRASS IN A NEAT PILE, ON THE BENCH, THAN WANDERING AROUND IN A CROUCH, POLICING UP BRASS, STREWN ALL ABOUT THE RANGE.......

Autos Only?

I've never shot at a range where there wasn't a showing of revolvers. Never heard a bad remark. Where I shoot, people talk friendly and often offer their guns to try. To me no matter what your preference, if you fancy yourself a shooter, enthusiast or pistolero, you must at least have one 357 and one 1911.

For me its the opposite. I get people coming by and saying stuff like "Wow, that's cool. Mind if I pick it up and take a look?"
If they act like they have half a brain, I'll let 'em shoot it. :D
The most attention I ever got was when I uncased a Colt SAA at the range.

I'm usually the only guy with blued guns and wooden stocks. The black plastic crowd is completely confused when I shoot my Savage .300 with a Stith mount and 3/4" tube scope. Shoot low- power plinking loads. 100 grain lead. It's a hoot

If you really want to get funny looks, load up your 10-shot .22 wheel gun with 10 different loads including high-velocity, standard velocity, .22 shorts, shotshells, primer-only Colibris and Super Colibris, etc.

I liked loading my Husqvarna revolver for its first shoot in years. Black-powder pressures only, to preserve it, so it doesn't go "Crack!" or "Bang!" really - more of a loud "Woof!?"

Guy in the next lane poked his head over to make sure I hadn't spontaneously combusted or anything. :)

I happen to like the old Colt SAA. Next time you meet this feller, you might ask him if his new fangled auto pistol will still perform well with half it's parts broken or missing.:D

I never really get that from anyone. I still see a lot of revolver shooters at local ranges but even the dyed-in-the-wool pistol shooters generally don't get negative about revolvers around here.

About three years ago I shot with a group of friends, a couple of whom rented guns from the range. One buddy was using a Glock and not doing too well. I was using my old Ruger Service Six, 4" barrel, because I was headed to the bear woods in Colorado to visit friends who lived up in the woods and I was required to keep a gun handy when we meandered around or just sat out on the veranda so that .357 was perfect. I didn't mind checking it on an airplane - that was the main reason I didn't bring my M686.

Anyway, I had fired off several hundred rounds, got re-used to that gun, so I was done. I watched his miserable shooting so I walked up to him, handed him my gun and some ammunition and said, "Why don't you shoot a real gun?" :D

Lo and behold - bulls-eyes and decent groups. I laughed and said, "Tolyaso" and that was that.

When I was next to the front door of my LGS doing the paperwork on a polished stainless CZ 75B, that was sitting in it's open case on the counter, literally everyone leaving the range asked about it. Even the black plastic fans appreciate a certain kind of bling.

You have a polished stainless 75B?!! That is just awesome. I just grabbed a NIB matte stainless on GunBroker last week (it's currently speeding it's way to me by mule train). I've come to believe the stainless models take the CZ from workhorse to art. Life is too short to just have black guns.

My experience has been the opposite. Last Thanksgiving we spent with my brother in law and my then 11 yr old daughter shot his 7 shot 686 and fell in love with revolvers. So I picked up a 929 for her with a speed rig. and she has been working it hard for the last year. Folks at the range are so taken aback by a young girl handling a moon clipped 6 1/2" N frame that they are sort of dumbstruck. I have enjoyed it to the point that I picked up a 327 and haven't messed with my STI's in a couple months.

Fine job Dad!
