THE 12 GAUGE

Iv'e got a 1940's Remington Model 11 Auto Loader cut it to 18 inch barrel & found a Cutts Compensator for it & also a great old Rem. Police 870. I stripped the Remington 11 & replaced everything except for the recoil buffer in the way back of the receiver. The one in there is relatively OK. Replacing it seems to be a procedural nightmare of sort what with the need for a blind rivet to hold the buffer pad & drill / bit to remove old rivet among other items. Also the charging handle channel in the reciver will RIP the flesh off your hand if you are not careful. And if your finger ever gets in that receiver you'll be going to the ER, that bolt is pretty powerful. Did I mention it's a BLAST to shoot?

90 plus replies and only 2 mentioned the Winchester 1200-1300 shotguns....Is there a problem that I am not aware of?

Randy

Good question! I am in the process of having an Alaskan State Trooper trade in shipped to my LGS. This one is the model 1300 marine finish.
Everything I have read has been mostly positive in terms of quality and reliability.
I am not sure if mfg. cost or other issues entered into the lack of competition with the Mossberg or Remington. But for what ever reason they are not as plentiful on gun boards as the aforementioned fine guns.

Op just titled 12 gauge

Nothing says they need to be:
a. short barreled
b. only 1 barrel
c. plastic components
d. color black or other version of tactikool
e. have a sling or shell holder

I realize I'm probably not invited into the party with most of the posters above, but if need arises….I'm going to be OK with:

a. long....(some real long) tube(s)
b. multiple barrels, some adjacent to each other, some got top position over another
c. more than 1 trigger

For situations like posted way above where I need to help my partner over a fence....I won't risk breaking a stock, so I have the "other choice" like mentioned in the post.:D

I've hunted most of my youth..but it was rifle..deer.. fox.. tree rats..

Okay, I know I'm going to regret asking this, but... Why the euphemism? I actually had to look up what a "Tree Rat" was and it's a Squirrel. So why not just call it a Squirrel?

After a LEO career spanning over 40 years I've got a few riot guns:
1-Remington 31
2-Remington 870 long tube
3-Remington 870 short tube
4-Remington 870 specail built w/12" barrel and front and rear pistol grip, have appropriate federal stamp.
5-S&W 3000 long tube
6-S&W 3000 short tube
7-S&W 3000 long tube folding stock, pistol grip rear
8-High Standard long tube
9-Winchester 1300 long tube stainless marine finish
10-Winchester 1300 long tube blued
11-Ithaca 37 trench style police w/hand guard bayonet lug
12-Ithaca short tube marked "Cross P.D. (have no idea where this is)
13-Ithaca long tube marine finish
14-Ithaca short tube marked US, Viet Nam era w/ correct marking, serial number range, and correctly placed sling swivels.
15-Mossberg 590 w/hand guard and bayonet lug, former owner Biloxi P.D.

Some of these I carried on duty over the years. Three of them (2 870's and the Mossy) I bought at a police auction because they were there...and average price was $110.00. I might have missed one, not sure.

A squirrel got into my neighbor’s house while they were away on vacation. They now refer to them as “tree rats”.

I'm holding out for Mossburg to make their shockwave HARD CHROMED, just like their mariner. And choke tubes in it. I don't like the coat jobs and I prefer to be able to adjust the patterns.

Shotguns came up on another forum, so I posed this one up as I haven't taken a pic of the TPS in a long time.

I had to put that limbsaver on it...the recoil from the thing was miserable. My reason for busting it out was that I popped on a red dot I had sitting around unused. It really works well with that shotgun.

Because that’s basically what they are. A rodent that goes in the tree, and instead of cheese, eats acorns.

I had a Model 12 Winchester years ago. The slamfire ability was insane. Basically like having a full auto shotgun. Recoil with 00 buck was intense, and the barrel would “walk” up just like a machine gun. Insane firepower for trench work or jungle patrols. Best to have a buddy with a Thompson or M16 to lay down some coverfire while you reload, though!

I read years back the Brits found in Malaysia the shotgun had a higher hit percentage in jungle warfare than a submachine gun. I believe them!
