Not because it's the best variation , being a 5 shot revolver. Not because it's in the best caliber , but 357 is more than effective. Not because it's not brutal in recoil and report. It's the best because I got a pocket holster for it and it's in my pocket every time I leave my house. It has been since I got it. It's my American Express , I never leave home without it.

I wish I could agree. I carried an M&P 340 for many years. It had a trigger job and chamfered cylinder. It was a great gun to throw in the pocket but not so fun to shoot. I carried 135gr SB Gold Dots in .38. I recently sold it and got a 649-2. The all steel guns are just so much easier to shoot.

Like Daddy always said…"Better to have a Rocket in your Pocket than a Desert Eagle in your Dresser"…or something like that:)

I used to have a 360PD that I would occasionally brave the Magnum loads in, but sold it because I wanted to go hammerless. I have a 342Ti for those drop it in your pocket and go moments, but I'd still like to pick up a no-lock 340PD. Whenever I do find them, there's always an N-frame that catches my fancy first and I have to buy it.

I too was dead set on carrying my hammered 360J but finally had to admit that carrying it had it's limitations & got a 340PD.

Carrying the 360J OWB at 3 o'clock would be fine but that's not how I want to carry a small revolver.

The 340PD AIWB or pocket carry is a whole lot better. ;)

I will respectfully disagree , to me 38s are more then enough , are easier to practice with dont give you the extra flash of all that powder burning outside the barrel along with the extra noise. Honestly to me six shots of 32 H&R mag would be the cats butt for ccw.

The light weight and compactness of the 340 while carrying 357 are its strengths. Accuracy beyond close range is its weakness. If you need it, you will not notice the recoil.

I don't mean to be argumentative. I agree with most of what you've said.

About the recoil though...in an armed encounter, you may not feel the recoil but it is still going to effect you.

Shot to shot split times are still going to stink no matter if you physically feel the recoil or not.

I've got one too, It's a joy to carry. Just watch your ammo, I had a .38 SPL 158 GR Mag tech and .357 158 GR Arsmcor jump crimp on me. Both where the 5th round, both locked the gun up. That said, neither of the rounds where what I would consider carry rounds. Neither of the rounds where roll crimped. I haven't seen the issue with any other round.

Been a huge fan for 14-15 years now. Every day, in a Bob Mika pocket holster.

I too pocket carry a 340 on a daily basis now.

If I use a belt or ankle holster, I grab one of the 640s or PC 940 Specials since the weight is not an issue

As I approach a quarter century of shooting 340s and 360s. My 340s have never been fired with anything but full power Magnum ammunition.

I have been faced with windshields and car doors as an obstacle to save a life, so carrying 38 Special will never be considered for my tools of the trade. I will always carry the most power that I can control

The 340s and 360s are not intended to be fun day at the range plinking guns. They are intended to be our save my butt gun when we walk into something unexpected and unpredictable

One of my 340s has well over 7000 rounds of full Magnum ammunition through it and has had about 100 State Troopers use it on the Off Duty Qualification Course. About 3/4 of them qualified with it. About 1/2 of them bought their own

I have never talked to the survivor of a firefight where he/she said they would have been just as happy (or perhaps happier) if they had faced the situation with a less powerful sidearm

Through the magic of handloading you can load something between 38 Spcl +P & full tilt 357s, use a medium speed low-flash powder along with the bullet of your choice, if that's what you prefer.

And you can still mainly practice with lower powered rounds at the range just as long as their POI coincides with your carry ammo.

Anything you shoot inside is going to be too loud but if it saves your life I think you'll still be happy.

The "best" gun is the one you always have on your person...... never the one that's higher capacity or more powerful BUT is left at home in your safe because it's too heavy and bulky to carry.

FYI: The Vegas Bass Pro has one, or at least they did last Saturday. Been there for a while at $899.

Yep, it's a physics v. physiology thing.

I can see why the OP loves his 340PD. Ive got the hammer version, a 360PD, and really like it as a CCW. Its a delight to carry, but less fun shooting at the range. There are pluses and minuses with every firearm. Just pick the one that's right for you.
