The Ammo World has Turned Upside Down

There are some crazy prices out there. I've still been getting 9mm for $12.97 for 50 rds.

I saw (and bought) ammo today at Cab—-s. 9mm was 14.99. 40SW was 18.99. They also had 45 acp, 380 and 40SW self defense. Had a limit of 2 boxes for any specific type of ammo
I'll be glad when those same conditions come back to my local Cabelas.

I was in there just last week. They used to have both sides of a whole aisle that was around 8 shelving units long full of pistol ammo, and another separate aisle just like it full of rifle ammo.

Last week it was one side of one half of an aisle (4 shelving units) for pistol and rifle ammo COMBINED, and even those shelving units were only about 1/3 full. The only "pistol" ammo they had was some 454 Casull and some 22 WMR.

A visit to the Sportsman's Warehouse showed their ammo section was just as small and severely understocked.

Went to the LGS today and they are expecting a huge shipment of ammo. The prices will be (each a box of 50): 45ACP, $30, 40S&W $35 and 9mm $40.
When I asked why, the LGS employee shrugged and said, "I do not try to understand any of this anymore".

Because that's what the market will bear. Buy the 45 ammo and consider it a good deal...

I'm putting together a Glock 35 parts gun (.40 and .357SIG) for this reason. Two calibers that are available if you poke around a bit. .357SIG prices are pretty much the same (9mm*2) they were last year.

The 2012 run got me more into revolvers as those calibers were relatively easy to find while the bottom feeder stuff was completely gone (along with .22 as we remember). This time around, I'm going the other direction.

I like the idea of a two box only, idea.

It gives the rest of us a shot at finding ammo, if we get there fast enough.

I think it's some sort of retirement plan. When the sporting goods stores get ammo around here, all the retired dudes are at the door waiting. Its gone in an hour, in the middle of the day. Then they sell it on the gun boards for double or triple the cost.

A local sporting goods store here just recently received (6) pallets of 9mm FMJ ammo in 50 rd. boxes. It's selling for $16.99 a box, no limit. Just 3-4 weeks ago they had the same deal and it sold out in 3 days.

I had 5 cases of 9mm at the show last weekend, I was charging 28$ a box my cost was 25.50$. I felt bad to have that price but all but 10 boxes sold. Someone's getting rich and it ain't me😩. Several people made some not so nice comments claiming gouging. I showed them the slip what I paid and told them at 2.50$ a box I considered it a public service!

I got lucky while on a business trip this week. Picked up an assortment of 45acp from different stores to help break in my Les Baer that is en route to me. Paid a total of $122 for 250 rounds of 45acp FMJ. Mix of Speer, Winchester WB, and Browning. I feel fortunate since I can't find it where I live. Luckily I won't have to dig into my stash, or use my reloads to break in my Stinger. I can't wait for this to be over, and I feel bad for those who aren't fortunate. It took me a week to come up with what I did, and I was glad to see the limits in place.

I remember those prices not too long ago.Cab---- here does not have a single handgun or common rifle round.

Bought 2 boxes Armscor 9s 12.99 at the local farm store..Also got 2 boxes Hornady 22 mag at 13.49... Seems "strange" buying 9mm for less rhan 22 mag in the current ammo climate

I was at Cab today just for the fun of it. They had maybe 20 boxes of ammo of one type or another, mostly for obscure calibers that I have never seen a gun for.

The Library had maybe 6 handguns, and all looked pretty sad.

The new handgun displays had maybe 10 revolvers, all waaaay overpriced, and another 6 Kimber 1911's that are always overpriced.

I went to buy a plastic ammo case and all were gone. I ended up buying a single spinner bait for next year's bass fishing.

I've stopped looking for ammo, but every time I go to Walmart, I go buy the gun/ammo dept. Today I lucked in to 2 boxes/50 CCI Standard Velocity 22 LR. $3.67/box. There were 5 boxes/50 CCI Stinger @$6.87/box. I passed on the Stingers. Otherwise, there were very few boxes of shotshells and no centerfire ammo at all.
Still concerned about what will happen in January after the inauguration :-(

Stopped by my local GS today to pick up a pre war Colt OP won on GunBroker.
No ammo at all, and around 25 to 30 guns, all consignment stuff. The goods news is the Gunsmith
has plenty of work, and more consignment guns are inbound from an estate.

Musings in the wind

Ammo prices are not coming down until frantic buyers stop driving the panic. Remember the toilet paper nonsense? I believe our TP inventory could sustain a small grade school for a week. My bathroom drawer stays full and I only make withdrawals.

When panic buying slows, supply levels increase, the price will slowly move downward until gun control taxing takes over. I cast bullets, have powder, primers, brass, and lead ingots in sufficient quantity to have a little left over for the estate sale. :D

Crying in your empty ammo box isn't going to change anything. 8-track players are gone, CD players are fading into oblivion, command console video screens are normal for your dashboard, and ammo prices will continue to rise until demand slows.

I found 2 boxes of .30 .30 today $23.00 each 20 rds in a box. They had more- just grabbed 2 boxes did not want to be a P.I.G. lol
