Anyone reading Rick Atkinson's newest about the early years of the Revolutionary War?

Really enjoying it so far. Well written and I'm learning a lot.

Most memorable line: when discussing the relatively inaccurate long arms in use at the time, he comments "The shot heard round the world probably missed."

It is a great book, with excellent research and an engaging writing style. I am about a quarter of the way through it.

Atkinson is one of the leading historians of our time. His trilogy on the European theatre of WW2 is one of the classics.

I have no experience with Mr. Atkinson, but I will search for this book now. I have never been able to absorb enough US history! Thanks for the heads up.

BTW, there are good miniseries on YouTube about Washington and about the Revolution.

I think the US victory was largely a miracle and due to French help. It was much closer than most today realize.

I don't know if my mother's family was American then. My father's side of the family was British until 1830.

Mr. Atkinson is a gifted writer. I enjoyed his, The Long Gray Line, about the West Point class of 1966.
As a student of history, I have just finished, America Aflame, a book by David Goldfileld on the Civil War. A good history read if you're into the Civil War. Living in Virginia as I do, there is so much history to keep one learning.

What do they want this time?

I had "fun" being an ex-Limey in "correcting my Son's history teacher about 30 years ago". I had him point out in an essay that the real reason that Cornwallis had to surrender at Yorktown was because the French defeated the Royal Navy at the battle of the Chesapeake Capes and thus could not remove the British Army by sea. For daring to contradict the teacher he received an "F". I then had him take in Mahan's famous textbook on Naval Strategy covering the Revolutionary Wars and other "minor skirmishes!". After she read the section I had him point out, she was both "furious and ashamed" as she told me later. Furious because she was wrong, and ashamed because her teachers in University had told her incorrectly, and she had never questioned them. He suddenly had an "F" corrected to an "A+". Dave_n
