I'm at about 600 rds of trbl free shooting with my 45 sheild and now my EDC is having multiple FTFeed on multiple mags and the Mrs. that has a 40 sheild just started having the same problem with just about the same round count. When it happens the slide is back but not sure if slide stop engaged and the round is flat in the mag. When I pull the slide back the round snaps up and feeds normally. I know some have replaced the mag followers with success, some had the springs replaced and some still having issues after a factory "repair".
We both have 4 mags and all are an issue. Not sure which way to go. But need something quik as my Sig P220 SS is a bit much to EDC.

You obviously have a number of possible problems, so it may be trial and error. Personally, I'd try a couple Wolff mag springs and see what that does for you. I believe Wolff sells them in a three pack, and even if they don't completely solve the issue, they certainly won't hurt. How old are the mags? Are they old enough to have been in the batch that had follower issues? If so, a call to S&W may get you some new mags or at least replacement followers. Good luck.

A cheap way to check the effect of the mag spring would be to remove it, stretch it to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer, replace it and see if the problem is gone. If so, buy stronger mag springs.
Another possibility is dirty magazine bodies. From your description, it sounds as if the round is not popping up fast enough to be in the correct position when the slide tries to grab it and push it forward.

The following advice is for your Shield .45. I'm not familiar enough with the Shield .40 to offer advice about it.

Try these three things first:
!. Make sure you have the updated magazine followers. The updated ones have a vertical groove in the right front corner.
2. Clean your magazines.
3. Get some mild car polish, and polish the lower feed ramp and the vertical area just below the lower feed ramp. That's where the bullet tips tend to hang up. I apply a tiny amount of polish with one end of a Q-tip and buff it off with the other end. It only takes a minute or two. I do it every time I clean my Shield.

I had similar fail-to-feed issues with my Shield .45, but they went away permanently after I did these three things. I've now gone 1,700 rounds without a problem.

Good Luck!

I just posted similar in another thread. Disassemble the magazine. I sanded off all edges of the follower all around to make them smooth. Take a file inside the magazine and smooth out around the magazine slot. Mine was rough (burrs) and causing drag. Load the disassembled magazine into pistol with slide locked back. Push the follower along with the spring. Note the area that the follower passed the magazine slot. Note any undue pressure or movement of the follower. Make sure it's smooth. Should be better.

I'm gonna give everything a good going over this weekend but won't be able to get any range time for a few weeks. I can't load mags by hand so I don't think it's a spring issue.

When was last time you field stripped and cleaned the gun? And which ammo are you using, Just curious.
