The Every Trip Range Gun

Do you have a gun that seems to go along on almost every trip to the range? No matter what your purpose, no matter what else you will be shooting. This one just seems to constantly find its way into the range bag.

For me its my S&W Model 18-3. This particular gun was set up by a previous owner with a red ramp front sight, a smooth faced trigger and a wonderful trigger job. I added a set of Uncle Mike's combat grips and its pretty much a twin for most of my DA defensive revolvers. This is the gun that taught me how to shoot a DA revolver. It goes to the range almost every time I do and I always shoot at least 50 rounds through it almost exclusively in DA mode. Its my favorite gun.

Of late, a Glock 44 .22 has been living in my range bag, I'm starting to get pretty good with it:

I shoot rifles twice a week. This is a Winchester 52D with a Lyman 25X scope. The rifle is from 1964 and the scope even earlier. The attached target will show you why I shoot it a lot. That is five shots. The coin is a Barber Nickel.

My 8 3/8" M17 and a CZ 457 .22 Jaguar, always have them two with me.

It would have to be my Victory .22 cal. I use it as my warm-up for the others I take.

There's a few that always seem to make the trip, but the first centerfire handgun I ever bought always goes, no matter what. Police trade in 15-3. Every single range trip since I bought it in '89. I paid $150 for it. I think I've gotten my money out of it.

I always take my personal 1911 (parts gun) that I originally built in 1982! I almost always take a 1917 Brazilian Contract that I've owned since 1986. Also my EDC model 49 no dash, that I've had since the late 90's. So, there are always 3 mags of 45, 6 moons of 45, and two boxes of 38 in the bag(s) just in case there is some time for a little more fun!

Not really. I only take two at a time and rotate them at a whim. I take one .22 and one centerfire. I'll shoot the pair for a few weeks and switch. Sometimes I switch just one, sometimes both.

I usually bring my 617 and finish up shooting some .22. It helps keep shooting affordable.

I don't really have one. But currently if I had to name one it would be my 4" 686. It's just a gun that feels good to shoot. I usually shoot 38 reloads for cost or reloads in 357 brass that are still just 38 reloads. But it's still makes magnums seem mild. It just feels natural in my hand. Of course I carried a revolver on duty daily for many years. But I do really like my Ruger MKIV target too.

I have a six inch Model 66-2 that goes a LOT, but in another couple of years it won't... because I'll be giving it to my youngest daughter.

Next to that, I suspect my Coonan Classic goes an awful lot.

No, no powder burns. But as I get older and the Doctor is watching my cataracts , I may need to get closer. Have switched from irons to scope for some of my shooting. Thanks for the kind words!

How is that Mid Range doing?

My Colt Gold Cup goes with me to the range every Friday. That is my handgun day. The target is 25 shots. It can do better, but the old guy behind the trigger is losing his touch!

It's this 66-4 that's my consistent range companion.

It has the best SA/DA trigger of all of my small herd of J's and K's and is a pleasure to shoot.

It's now become too cumbersome for me to EDC so it's now relegated to range duty only.

Seems like .22s are the common theme!

If I'm shooting at the indoor range, my 17-2 is in the range bag. If I'm shooting outdoors, my M&P .22 Compact makes the trip.

Since it became my EDC a few months ago, my 642-2 goes along every trip. Since I'm almost always shooting some other 357/38 there is almost always 38 ammo along, so the 642 comes out and gets 25 rounds or so downrange. Not a bad shooting little gun really, as long as I can do my part.
